The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire

Tesla Big Battery Bank is on fire and spreading to other batteries

Quote:
A toxic blaze at the site of Australia's largest Tesla battery project is set to burn throughout the night.

Key points:
A 13-tonne Tesla lithium battery is on fire near Geelong
The battery was expected to be ready later this year
It was due to be the biggest battery in the southern hemisphere
The fire broke out during testing of a Tesla megapack at the Victorian Big Battery site near Geelong.

A 13-tonne lithium battery was engulfed in flames, which then spread to an adjacent battery bank.

More than 150 people from Fire Rescue Victoria and the Country Fire Authority responded to the blaze, which has been contained and will be closely monitored until it burns itself out.

"If we try and cool them down it just prolongs the process," the CFA's Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ian Beswicke said.

"But we could be here anywhere from 8 to 24 hours while we wait for it to burn down."

The Tesla battery is expected to become the largest battery in the southern hemisphere as part of a Victorian Government push to transition to renewable energy.

"A 13-tonne battery"

How many A 13-tonne batteries are there?

Damn, those are not looking too green when the smoke leaks out.

I'm going to say this is a failed test.

If each big white box is a battery, then there's 40 per grid, one of the grids is full and the other looks like there are 40 planned for that spot too. It's hard to say if there's another grid off to the left in the photo.

I suppose this is better than 3-mile island or Chernobyl.

The fire broke out where France’s Neoen SA is installing 210 Tesla Megapacks as part of a 300-megawatt battery storage project. When operational, the facility will store enough energy to power more than one million homes in Victoria for half an hour, according to the project’s website.

So much for environmentally friendly zero emissions technology.

Help me here. I’m all for electric and am excited to see the future on this ...but....how is this considered “green” technology? Massive amounts of fossils fuel, is required to make these batteries from the mining operation, plastic casings for the batteries and wires, smelting the ore for the batteries and wires, etc.
And then, the damn things have to be charged with electricity that will most likely come from a fossil fuel power generator.
It’s not green energy....it’s an alternative source of power delivery. A damn cool one but not one that’s going to save the world from fossils fuel usage. Why would there be that much invested in a bank of batteries that can only store enough power for 8 hrs of reserve for a town? Doesn’t make sense to me.

That is either a useless statistic, a useless project or both.

well I'm pretty sure they aren't meant to be charged by fossil fuels, but are meant to fill the gap where solar and wind energy have fluctuations , eg to either supplement when there's a drop in supply or increased peak need.

So if anything they are meant to reduce the need on fossil gas fired plants that are now often used to ramp up when solar or wind is dropping off (nights, wind still)..

So they aren't meant to support an entire town on their own, they are to supplement other supplies when there's shortage and to charge from those other supplies when there's to much supply.

Think windmills that are often throttled down when there's not enough draw on the network, they would be left full power to charge these batteries.

210... wow.

Decades ago, just out of engineering school, talking with a buddy with his masters in EE (power & control). I asked him about capacitance solutions (topic being line transmission losses.) He told me how he had done the math... that you could take over a few high(real estate) cost city blocks, fill them with batteries, charge during low usage... and still not make much of a dent in attenuating high usage spikes.

Seems that this proves that out clearly.

Makes sense that the use is a “gap” for power.

Long term, the Lithium battery is untenable. There isn't enough lithium around.

I am looking at the Iron-Flow batteries stationary storage. And for replacement of the vehicle battery, i think the Sodium or Calcium batteries will be the winners.

We all need mini nuclear reactors at home. Power a house for decades.

Yea, our own "Mr. Fusion" would be great, like in Back to the Future.

Just think, we can just get rid of our trash with and have unlimited electricity! No more landfills and we can stop harvesting the unicorn tears!

Now if we can just get the laws of physics to obey the congress and change to fit our wishes. Maybe we can have gravity reduced by 50% while we are at it.
