The mark-up is added before the car is ordered.
At least with Honda.

Yep.

Used cars from fair weather states will last forever well maintained.

Plenty of those to choose from if you’re short.

Today....driving a 10 mile trip. The road is brown with the countys mixture of salt/sand.
The wheel wells are packed with the snow/sand/salt mixture. Drive it into the garage and it melts.
The melting mixture seeps into every crack/opening on the car....where it eats away.

There's that and and tons of cars that were never built. MBZ is delivering some cars with a disclaimer that some chip-oriented components will be installed later in order to get more cars out, and I've heard other manufacturer's are doing the same. MBZ and Volvo are down around 80% from their normal inventory now. The car business (like many) is "supply and demand." Some cars are selling for MSRP or close, some are selling for up to $25K over MSRP, even $100K over MSRP, like on a G-wagon. Even MSRP is thousands more $ than the cars were selling for 6-12 months ago. There's lots of people around with more money than brains. Others are just waiting or buying out their current leases for an attractive price by today's standards. It's a seller's market. If you can sell and wait, that's the smart play.

Would there even be a car left after another winter season ?

It has been pickled for what, 10 years, now.

Nooo...it's in great shape...aside from some brown on the bottom of the door pockets.
I'll put it up against most any car at the stoplight. The v-tec is awesome.

No lies - I just got gifted from my parents a 2003 Ranger with < 40k (GRR/DET) miles and, while the paint is actually OK, the whole underside needs a wire wheel and some POR-15. OK, a lot of POR-15. So much rust on an otherwise pristine truckito!

Every time I complain about the desert mountains here, dry skin, bleeding eyeballs and all of that - I think of that rust...

(OK I'm still bitter over my 1978 cutlass calais' bumper rotting off (falling off!) in 1990 with only maybe 40k on the odometer - it's probably in some ditch today in Grandville MI)

My dad has an early 2000s Ford F-350 diesel. 200k miles, some rust in the quarters. His mechanic said he could get $20k for it no problem right now.

Yeah, sounds like it's just surface rust and won't be an issue I wouldn't worry about it.

It is quite something. Specifically the local Toyota dealer has so few inventory on the lot, I thought they had shut down / moved.

It isn't a huge problem if you buy the new vehicle for more, as your used vehicle will also fetch 40% (!) more than it did before the pandemic.

I just bought a new truck, had to look at what's in the pipeline online and hunt it down at the dealer the day it came in.

IMHO it will get worse before it gets better, so for me waiting wasn't an option. I use my truck for camping and hunting, so it needs to be extra reliable and capable. And I have a feeling there will be lots of camping to come still before you can go fly around and go to hotels again just for fun and without a bunch of restrictions.

If you wanted everyone to convert to electric cars, you would cause a new car shortage, a run up on used cars, and a rise in gas prices…Nah, electric cars need chips too. Or do they?
