What am I looking at?
The size is impressive, but what does it do?

It's a compressor for a large diesel engine. Remember, diesel engines don't have fuel in the intake. Brand Man or GE.
What's unique is that the 2 screws run at different speeds. Look at the gears. IDK the the principle behind that. It might be less wear or higher performance, or both. |

Good eye! I didn't notice that. It may have something to do with harmonics.

Im thinking air compressor for some sort of processing, blast furnace for large steel mill? Possibly oil and gas industry steam compressor.

And the screws are two different sizes, too.

I dug up some info, SCUEL 816. Capable of 16 BAR, 232psi that is quite impressive, but airflow up to 100,000 Meters cubed per hr, so if my math is correct 58,856 cfm. It must need a lot of HP to get that.

Stop guessing. Use Google images search.
A MAN Diesel & Turbo process-gas screw Extreme process gas conditions require robust and reliable compressors. Screw compressors are able to cope with conditions and applications reciprocating or centrifugal compressors cannot serve due to corrosion and erosion impact. MAN Energy Solutions process-gas screw compressors have been successfully applied to a wide range of applications including mining, iron and steel mills, chemical complexes, the petrochemical industry, refineries and oilfields. The screw compressor is ideal for the compression of light gases. Wide fluctuations in gas composition and associated molecular weight do not influence a screw compressor's mechanical behaviour. Relatively low tip speeds allow both the compression of dust laden gases as well as the injection of liquids into the compression chamber for cooling and washing. MAN Energy Solutions screw compressors are designed for suction flows of up to 100,000 m3/h and discharge pressures of much as 50 bar. They are engineered as single or multi-stage units in accordance with API619 and can be driven either by electric motors or steam turbines. |
