Woodworking and checkering on longspoon grips

I was curious how checkering was added to spoon grips and stocks, so I checked out youtube. I found this video which is really cool. I had assumed that it would be a tedious process requiring a lot of patience, but wow, that's a bit of an understatement.

I don't know that I have the patience for that sort of work.

What made me wonder about this is that I've been watching some woodworking groups on facebook, primarily for hand tools (unplugged woodworking). And I've seen that Chaplin planes had checkered totes which is very cool (love the checkering on spoon grips, and this seems like the perfect place for it).

The interesting thing is that these checkered totes are hard vulcanized rubber, not wood. I think checkered wood totes would be something.

Next thing you know, I'll be looking up metal engraving...

That would easily outstrip my patience.

I really wish I had those skills.
Especially metal engraving.
All I got so far is a half done wooden spoon from apple wood that looks like a kindergarten project..
I am light years away from actual skills.

I see folks in the unplugged woodworkers group frequently making wooden spoons and most of them are pretty amazing. I've never tried it, but I'm sure mine would be similar to yours. Are/were you using wet wood? I understand that spoons, and parts of chairs are often made from wet wood. I think it's supposed to be easier to shape than dry.

What? Come on, he finished that whole thing in 30 mins!

I'm wondering how they did it before the fancy tools. I would think just using the V-grooved chisel would mean that a bunch of those diamonds would end up chipped. Maybe that's not the case if the chisel is REALLY sharp, or maybe it's that and the kind of wood used.

My wood is dry and hard like granite.
Fresh (wet) wood is a lot easier to work with.
Also, next to skills, I lack the proper carving tools.
All by all, getting to something that is spoon shaped is pretty amazing, if I do say so myself...

So, stage 2 or 3?

Or are you about done with one of these?

I'll take a picture later.
Just make sure you're sitting down or you'll break a rib laughing.

Maybe start with a more forgiving material, like brass!

Why do people use the word spoon instead of gun? This is easily the lamest thing I've seen on this forum. Do you think you are giving the FBI the slip or something idiotic like that? Do you think you're some teenager spy using a secret code language? Grow up.

I guess it is working.
Spoon Spoon Spoon.

Lighten up dude, it's a long standing forum tradition.
We're not going to stop because you think it's stupid.

The only one............

About 40 years ago I decided that I wanted to try restocking a rifle. While I am fairly handy with tools, I had no idea what I was getting into! I decided to restock a Winchester Lo Wall single shot rifle, bought a rifle stock blank and read everything I could get my hands on about shaping and fitting wood to metal! So, about 6 months later, I had the finished product/project While it is not up to professional standards, I do think it turned out pretty decently! Some pictures:

I can close my eyes, shoulder the rifle and be looking straight thru the scope! Oh, yes, it is chambered for the 22 magnum cartridge and is quite accurate!

Nice, thanks. I'll watch it (even if I never checker anything)

Really nice!

Now you need to watch a couple of videos, buy a bunch of tools and go to town with checkering. I'll be waiting for your new pics 6 months down the line.

Your stock is so nice, I'd be petrified to screw it up if I tried to checker it.
