Do you buy meat at Walmart?
I do a lot of shopping there but have never bought meat until last week. I just wanted to try their roast beef cold cuts so I bought one package. I made a sandwich yesterday which was 4 days after I bought the meat. It smelled ok but sure tasted kinda gamy. I threw the rest out even though I didn’t get sick from it. I’ve never had roast beef that tasted like that, not even from a gas station deli.

I do.. but I've had some baby back ribs in the past where there was noticeably a break in the cold chain if ya know what I'm sayin. I brought the receipt back and they refunded me the price of the ribs.
I typically buy chicken wings when they're getting close to their sell by date and do hotwings and homebrew. It's the best price I've found on chicken wings and I don't let the get beyond the sell by date even though I could freeze them and they'd be okay.

Not every time but often enough. Not the greatest beef but also not totally unreasonable.

Yeh I would stay away from Walmart meat. Since when was one chicken breast enough to feed a family of 10. Not sure what cocktail they’re pumping into chickens but Jesus!!
You know things have gone to hell when you have to spend triple to get products without poison in them. |

Do you buy meat at Walmart?
When I’m at my in-laws I do. Their walmart is new and the only game in town with the exception of a very small acme store with poor quality, i go to Walmart for most everything. I bought grass fed rib eyes there once. Individually vacuum packed and they were good.
I think the trick is you need a significant volume of people that are buying those products. With the above post of roast beef as an example, cold cuts that aren’t getting a big churn will not do well. While they might be safety ahead of any sell by date and safe to eat, doesn’t mean they’re any good. |

I buy the absolute minimum at Walmart, least of all food. I'd have to be really desperate.

I buy everything I can from Walmart.
But I also shop at other stores if more convenient. Priority for me is time and distance. I will always buy quality wherever I shop. Even if it means I just don't buy. I like the Sara Lee Honey Turkey breast at Walmart. Their imported Swiss Cheese is also excellent.

Walmart is not always the cheapest.
I don't buy fresh meat from there. Costco got red meat. Meat packers for chicken and pork.

Unfortunately in our small rural town the Walmart Supercenter is the only grocery store we have . So yes we buy meat there . If we drive 12 miles in opposite direction there is an Ingles grocery store and a IGA . That's it to choose from.

It's not fair to compare Walmart meats with other stores. They buy their fresh meat from a local dist if possible. (it's not like frozen foods)
If you drive a couple hours to another Walmart...the fresh meat selection is different.

She brought home Angus ground beef from Sam's. 88/12. I like 80/20 chuck that HEB puts out.
The Tyson chicken hauler doesn't make stops until it hits the slaughter house outside of town. It smells like, well you know, but I might get a free one some day!

I buy Walmart meat on a fairly regular basis for general grilling or cooking, I can't complain. For better cuts I go to a specialty butcher but not for.

We've got a Lowe's Market about 4 miles away and then 12 miles the other direction, we've got a Walmart with a little food, small HEB, and a Brookshire Bros. We do very little shopping in any of those, but if I've got a choice, I'm going to the Lowe's. Fortunately, my wife is at the kids/grandkids' place every week, so she brings food home from there. If she doesn't get a chance, we drive the 85 miles into Houston to shop where we used to live.

I don't buy meat at Walmart (Costco), but I go there for food staples, cleaning supplies, etc. It's about 22 miles from here, while the Albertsons is about 15 (nothing in between or nearer). I try to buy as little as possible from the Albertsons, because they really, really gouge you. An example is a pint of heavy whipping cream, which I use as a creamer in my coffee. Albertsons charges $6.99, while Walmart's is $2.06. Plus, the one I buy from Albertsons is watery compared to that from Walmart.
