Backyard drama this morning.

This bobcat was stalking a couple of rabbits for about 20 minutes. The rabbits finally took off. It's great to see wildlife interaction.

One of those ate my cat. A dear sweet housecat. I thought they were cool too, filmed them, named them...until I found what was left of my kitty. Word on the street is they are territorial. -WW

I found evidence of a coyote consuming a small dog when raking my leaves a few years back.

Get the drama even in the ‘burbs.

Lots of “missing” cat posters.

I would have used a rifle instead of a camera for that shot. I saw one in the woods behind my house last year... a coyote a few years back.... and what appeared to be a "picked clean" bone (probably a leg bone from a fawn or small deer) in my back yard last week. Don't come around here no mo' .... 'cause I WILL shoot if you are a predator with four legs... with no hesitation.

I am not a fan of seeing coyotes in the community but the bobcats keep the rabbit population down. In our city, house cats are not allowed to roam.
We have a few different types of falcons in the neighborhood. Kestrels and Merlins I have seen hunting around my property.
I had a Merlin crash into my front window. It was a cool spring morning with some fresh wet snow and I found the poor bird on the ground. I went to the garage and grabbed my welding gloves and was able to get the bird to perch on my hand while I took it to the back yard out of the wind and into the sun to warm up. It hung out perched on my hand for about 20 minutes and I took out my phone to try to call someone to help me out. As soon as the phone beeped, the bird shook off the shock and flew off.
That was a really cool experience to be able to examine a wild raptor so closely!

Sounds like you just want to shoot everything?

Nope. Lots of critters get a free pass.... coyotes and bobcats that endanger my and particularly my neighbors' pets do not. Foxes, cats and others are welcome tho'....

Nice photo. We had a bobcat outside our bedroom window a couple of months ago. They're commonplace around here but I had never before heard one roar! It sounded exactly like this clip and went on for about 10 minutes.

Bobcat Sounds

The one I heard last summer was just after 6am.... from a few hundred yds deep in the woods.... as I was throwing a tennis ball to my Lab... she was oblivious... tennis ball . Put her inside as I heard the bobcat approaching us both making hair raising noises... didn't know WTF it was. After poochie was inside, I caught a glimpse of the bobcat heading down to a pond that's behind me. Put out trailcams, but never saw it again. Was my 65lb Lab at risk.... I dunno? Were my neighbors' little yappers.... you bet they were. I've had foxes IN my backyard before.... since I don't have chickens .... I still have a phone video of one... beautiful . I hate to even harm a fish that I always release too... but...

That's just me

Bobcats and coyotes are not welcome here .... they know it too.... the total I've killed thus far ... zero.

We had backyard drama in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago. Our Dachshund, Reuben actually caught and killed a bunny. It was not quite full grown, but it was shaken to death quickly.

He had his jaws clamped down and was not going to give it up. My wife placed him the the bed of my El Camino as a corral to keep him from going anywhere. I put a couple of treats on the bed of the Elky, and we could see his brain working. I finally put down the bunny, and went for the treats. I grabbed the bunny and took it to the compost pile to be buried.

Reuben has gotten a few mice, but this was a big prize he really did not want to give up.

This is just the mouse. No photo of the bunny, it was not photo worthy, just rather gross.

We have several litters of Bobcats every year in peoples backyards in our suburban community.

Less Coyotes than we used to have.

Tons of Raptors, even one notoriously savage murder of Crows who actively hunt small birds and such.

Then there are the venomous danger noodles whose population seems to explode this time of year.

Hence, our cats don't go outside and pocket dogs should never be left outside unsupervised.

Just a part of living where we live.

The bobcat in the photo is a local guy. I say "guy" because I saw him marking one of my bushes as he passed. I 've seen him half a dozen times, & the neighbor across the road saw him on their patio a few weeks ago. I was hoping it was a female, so we might see some kittens.

Can I borrow him to solve our cat problem?

I enjoy watching the cotton tails, hares, the local road runner and little lizards do push ups.... small things in life that bring the civility back to life.
