What's your strategy to control flying insects in your outdoor living area?

Lot of products on the market.

Traps, repellents, control products, etc. etc.....

I've used citronella candles and torches but never anything like this (see below) but am considering one.

Thanks for any input....summer is herein Florida!

Baz - I have one of those and it helps a lot. Even better if you can get your surrounding neighbors on board to get them too.

Read the instruction and follow them, the idea is to draw the bugs away from you and kill them.

You want to place it away from where you want to enjoy the outside, I have mine a good 50 feet from our patio into the back yard it seems to draw them away nicely.

Also for doors are those magnet curtains, but wherever there is a light source behind the bugs will always stack up on the surface to tailgate through behind a human. It has something to do with the 60mhz and attraction I think. A regular house fan beyond blowing outwards that might work.

We had a bug zapper like that one at a house when we lived in Dallas. After a few weeks, we noticed there were no longer any dead bugs on the ground underneath it in the mornings. Then we saw the large frog the next night hop right over and sit underneath the zapper come dusk!

I have heard though that the zappers seem to attract the male mosquitoes rather then the biting females.

You only use the misting system during the times the biting mosquitos are out, which is dawn and dusk. And the best thing is to only use them IF you are going to be outside. You do not want to kill the good bugs (bees, etc.) with the bad.

We start out swatting at them with our hands. After the first cocktail we use rolled up papers and actual fly swatters. Another cocktail and we are having fun shooting at them with salt rifles. About the time the burgers are done someone brings out some bottle rockets. A good strong bottle rocket barrage will keep them at bay for 12 -15 seconds. Cousin Mike starts lighting then up with his 12 gauge loaded with birdshot about the time the third case of Bud Lite arrives. Tiki torches and those hanging electronic things are favorite targets. Later in the evening a variety of short range fireworks are employed.
Wait - what was the question?

We don't have any biting bugs. Bats take care of lots of flying insects around here. I had a friend that had one of those electric bug zappers. It was always satisfying to hear that zapping sound.

Baz, I recently installed two of those exact units (the supersized one from that maker, just like in the pic) in the hanger I primarily work in, in Ft. Worth, TexASS. All manner of bugs love it here, especially mosquitos, and I wanted to try those because I am so tired of being dipped in Off multiple times, daily. There seemed to be a lot of positive reviews for their effectiveness against mosquitos, and so far they seem promising.

BTW - there are many, big fans in the hanger, but those simply don't do enough on their own if the mosquito clouds are thick enough.

Six bird feeders in the back yard. Our place is swarmed with chickadee type things all summer. Almost no bugs make it through the gauntlet to us.

We installed a similar system about 10 years ago. We are lakefront in central florida. These work great, I can go outside and lay in the grass again!!
They are not perfect. They take mosquito numbers down 99%, right at dusk we still get a couple. System is somewhat high maintenance, we have about 65 misting jets and at least once a year something is clogged, cut, broken.
These work GREAT.
