Hell, I'd noticed the same with Levis. I always tried on EVERY pair that I bought. Even if I went to a store, and tried on a pair, and there were 10 other pairs of the same size and model sitting on the shelf with the first pair, I had to try on EVERY pair because the fit varied that much. And they don't last for crap any more. I haven't bought Levis in probably 10-15 years.

I'm guessing the guys doing the mining back in the day may have been a little tougher than you and me. Hell, probably everyone back in 1890 other than aristocracy, men, women, and children, were probably tougher.

A friend was at Filson in Seattle when a young fellow came in with a tattered Filson "Timber Cruiser" oiled tin cloth jacket and asked that it be repaired. Filson gear is 100% guaranteed forever. The staff freaked, saying this was one of the first jackets Filson ever made. Filson started business in 1897. They said they would repair it but gave the young man another option. He could have any jacket in the store plus $500 if he left the old one for Filson to display on the wall behind glass. Filson gear with patina is desirable anyway. The young man said it had belonged to his grandfather and declined the offer. He wanted THAT jacket repaired.

Some would say this is a shame. Kind of like finding an original, preserved 1939 Porsche 64 and then turning it into a restoration class vehicle.

Interesting. I suspect those are comfy. I also suspect that 99.9% of the time, they'd make me sweat. Too hot down here for me for those.

I remember you telling that story before. Very cool. Also very cool that the young man planned to wear the coat as his grandfather did. That would feel far more connected than sticking it in a picture frame behind glass.

Yes..they are made for freezing temps. Reg jeans are not warm in that temp.
When the wind is blowing and it's snowing...lined jeans are perfect.

I wear Wranglers (13MWZ) and get them online from 'The Fort'. Consistent size in the rigid (indigo??) color, but the Shadow Black are like a size larger for some reason. They wear a lot better than Levi's. 47MWZ is a new version with a little more space.

I remember Levi 501's cost $3.98 in 1958. That would be $41 now days (according to the inflation calculator I looked at). Those jeans were stiff until you had worn & washed them several times, & the material was thick and durable. I don't know how much they cost now days. At my age, I only wear a certain set of clothes and almost never buy something new. Clothing now days is thin, cheap, has inconsistent quality. They use every trick to cut corners like printing the labels instead of sewing them in - although the practicallity of it doesn't make any difference, but there are many other examples too. I've had some items of clothing for more than half a century, & it's interesting to compare those with what you buy now days.

Cool bit on Filson.

Our daughter was micro-preemie and spent many months in a NICU 100 miles from home. The month she was born I bought a Filson canvas duffel for the numerous trips between Los Alamos and Albuquerque. It hurt a little to pay for, but there's a reason they're not cheap. It's a beast even though it's the small "fits under the seat in front of you" sized. I still use it a few times a month nine years later and it'll either be her 18th bday or wedding gift. Good stuff there...

Raw denim's still available, and I have a pair in 16oz denim standing up (!) in the corner. It sure isn't $41 anymore though.

But, to echo you, fabric (like most else) is crap these days. Lowest bidder for the lowest price to you (but of course highest profit for them).

I have a light merino wool sweater from the banana-joint that was made in the late 90s and it's still going strong. I bought one that I thought was similar, though oddly it had the same $ price, 20 years later and it pilled up/went to crap in three wearings.

The Wranglers I buy are still like that. Stiff as a board and unfaded. Lots of stuff now is pre "seasoned", acid wash, stone washed, rips, etc. No wonder why they do not last. Mine get that way the old fashioned way, I wear them a many, many times.

+1 on Wranglers. They're not as stiff as my Carhartts but they do last me a long time.
