I love that era of Rolls. I keep thinking someday... The cool thing up here in Washington is that, at its age, it no longer has to pass smog, either visually or mechanically. Actually, nothing does anymore. Makes them much less daunting.
Hey Jeff, it turned out that I had a bad set of points that was shorting out somehow, (IIRC), I put new ones in and everything worked as it was supposed to with the test light. I timed it with the static method and when I got a chance to put a strobe on it, it was dead nutz!!

No smog on 1975 and older cars down here as well. The challenge would be degraded wiring, miles of vacuum lines and weird servos and switches everywhere under the hood.

Awesome, Denis, I'm glad it was something relatively easy. And Cheap.

My favorite old Rolls story involves a buddy who bought a Silver Cloud about 15 years ago. He hadn't had it long, and it started handling funny. Turns out it had a broken lower a-arm on the right front. He was very concerned at what that was going to cost to repair on his old Rolls.

He very tentatively contacted the dealership in the Seattle area, who said "we'll look at it". He brought it in for an inspection, no more, in hopes of getting an estimate. A week later they call and tell him they could find nothing wrong. "B.S." was his first thought, "they just don't want to deal with it".

So he goes in to pick it up and finds it up on the lift for his inspection. The entire front suspension had been replaced, both sides. He protested "I didn't authorize any repairs", fearing the bill.

Their reply? "We are sorry, sir, but there were no repairs. It's merely been cleaned for inspection. There will be no charge."

"But I saw for myself a broken a-arm!"

"We are sorry sir, but we believe you were mistaken. A Rolls Royce simply does not fail in that manner. Have a nice day."

Unbelievable. Until we stop to consider that everyone buying a new Rolls from them had chipped in on that repair...

You need to wear white cotton gloves and the appropriate embroidered overalls and tie (bow or otherwise, we've relaxed our standards to meet modern society).

Like some of the others, I love that dash! Has quite the industrial feel to it.

For me, it's the complete lack of icons and exclusive use of words and letter abbreviations that does it.

Icons have made international vehicles easier to sell. But they all look the same.

Yes, the dash is very cool. Like the "luxury" version of a 911 dash. The dash from the air-cooled cars is still my favorite. I'd love to have an old air cooled (pre-964) dash complete with gauges to hang on a wall or put on a bookshelf or something.

I guess my dad is a Rolls mechanic then too. He had an ‘80’s Silver something that had a fan blade just break off while running, somehow flew out the bottom without hitting anything. Having no luck sourcing another, he and his brother went to the junkyard and found one off a Pontiac with the same hole pattern and called it good enough.
He loved playing chauffeur in that thing.

Totally agree. I should have taken more pictures of the interior, it’s stunning. The dash and gauges look brand new and wow, they did not cut corners on that part of the car. The center console is also beautiful going all the way down between the seats. +++
