HVAC change?
Running heat due to first cold spell? Thinking lotta warm air hitting a cold membrane. A lot of rainfall? Pressure washing windows? |

Heat has been on for a bit and we keep it cool (mid 60’s). We did just have about 4” of rain with strong winds….thinking now based on responses maybe some water got in through chimney flashing.

12 year old house, the sides likely have Tyvek? Roof leak. How air tight is the house? Dryer or stove vent causing vacuum?

Does the flue carry clean steam, or smoky smoke?
This is a small dribble of dirty water happening frequently in a small quantity and drying up. Given the flue nearby, assuming it carries smoke then I'd say that's creosote leaking out. If not, then I'd say it's condensation forming in the cavity above possibly related to the flue, and washing water soluble material down the back of the pitched wood, which is entering. Definitely needs fixing else it'll rot the wood from the back out of sight. Sent from my SM-G988B using Tapatalk |

I’m going to go with some kind of insect, rodent, etc. poop or pee. Pull the stained trim down and tell us what you see.

checked it again with the moisture meter this morning and it's down several points, so seems to be drying out. I think chimney flashing is the likely culprit and this last downpour with high winds was enough for a bit of rain to get in a small gap. I'm going to have someone check it out...this chimney is very high, equivalent to 3 stories from ground in back of house, and on a steep cedar roof - my roof climbing days are over!

We had an occasional leak around our chimney 2 years ago. Seemed to only happen with the right combo of heavy rain and wind direction. It was resealed but I do need a new roof. Just putting it off as long as I can!

I was thinking poltergeist. A little brighter shade of red and it could pass for blood. But yeah, putrefying juices is a possibility.

Yeah, I'm thinking something similar. After posting this, I vaguely (VERY vaguely) remember something similar now a couple of years ago, where I recall wiping what I thought was soda at the time off a wall and was confused as to how it got there (we don't drink soda). It's wasn't nearly as bad as this and I didn't think much of it at the time, but now that I think about it it may have been in this very spot. So like you said, probably just the right combo of wind and rain. I'll get it checked out soon....

I had or still have a leak from my roof where the flashing was between roof and a entry gable. Under the right weather conditions, like severe rain and sideways 50 mph wind water would get in. Not sure if I solved that problem but I bought matching shingles and then covered that aluminum flashing. Unfortunately I need to do some interior repair work still as it came through the bathroom ceiling in a corner. When up in my attic I cannot see anything, but somehow it gets in. It was also in a bathroom I never go in and wasn't paying attention.
