I see it on more reliance on technology and the engineers than on the person behind the wheel. The team with the biggest budget will be able to figure out the tech the best.
Races are won or lost over pit stops, aero... The driver has little or no control over those things. I wonder if the hybrid system will be the same situation.

This is the same Herta that would be an F1 driver?

This year it's Penske, one of the 3.

If so, I hope its McLaughlin. Who will the 500 pick in 2024?

Dixon is my favorite, but who knows if he has the speed? But, as he has found out, you can have speed but a single mistake like speeding in the pits, will hose your race

Larson obviously had a fast car, but he outqualified Pato. I agree pack racing is different but he has a shot.
Penske obviously have quali pace. Remains to be seen what happens with race pace for the others. I'm pulling for Herta just because of the obvious efforts he made in the offseason to improve.

With a 500 mile race it's always interesting to see who manages the pit stops, adjustments to the car and stays on the lead lap. Those are the guys that are around at the end. The Big 3 teams just seem to know how to do this better.

Larson...qualifies 4th at Indy, then flew south to finish 4th in the Nascar all star race...an omen?

His interviews have been good.

Rahal - I used to dislike. But last year (and this year) he also showed us some humility and sportsmanship.

Hoping for a good race with no serious wrecks.

The thing about any Indy Car oval race, especially the 500, is the timing of passing. Not all wrecks are a result of 2 cars either hitting or just an aerodynamic anomaly, but most are. These guys that are there at the end are fast and patient. The first 2 cars can play leap frog but behind them that is not possible. It can take 4 laps to plan and execute a pass. Larson may find that running down competitive cars while dodging the slower traffic is a lot more than it seems.

Of course a lot depends on pit stops and the lack of mistakes. AFA racing goes, I'm against pit stops being part of the competition. As a result I'm a fan of the current NASCAR segments with the breaks for pitting, or in the case of some, not pitting. I would only add to all series a mandatory pit time that is longer that what is capable today. For instance, NASCAR has done some 4 tire changes and gas in the 11 second range. Make it 15 seconds and be safe.

That still penalizes goof ups but takes a lot of the danger out of pitting. It also removes the emphasis that requires special athletes that don't add that much value to the team other than to change tires. I like that IndyCar takes longer to fuel than to change tires. There is no excuse for a loose wheel nut. I don't know what to say about F1 and 2 seconds. The strategy aspect is still there if it took a minute.

Interesting perspective. I don’t agree, but to each his own. I like the pressure on the crews and the drivers to be efficient and effective. The better crews give their drivers an advantage. Conversely, bad stops may not be able to be overcome on track.

My bad. You're right. Larson starts in the middle of row 2.

1800 lb. car with 3300 lbs. of downforce being applied to 225 mm front tires. What could go wrong.
Plenum sneeze with the big 1.5 bar boost seems to be an issue when the 12K rev limiter kicks in on a hot motor.

Today's plenum is yesterday's manifold. Always coming up with new speak like overcut and undercut. How about "pitting early?"

Forecast now for storms at start time. Larson may not get his shot-if it rains and stops but delays the race, Hendrick has to decide if he goes to Charlotte. They need the points. Options apparently are to put TK back in the car - he'd need a refresher session which Indycar will grant- or give the ride to Nolan Siegel.
