My BIL is the GM for a local Ford dealership. Had dinner with him last week. He was telling us that his dealership got 2 EVs; one pickup and the other was that Mach thing. Both sat for an eternity, something like 2 years. The pickup finally sold to an employee's spouse, ergo huge discount. The Mach thing never sold and they ended up making it a loaner vehicle.

+1

Sometimes things are rare for a reason.

Also, seems like the majority of Targa owners fit the OP's demographic.

Air cooled 911’s, with some exceptions, are not rare. They made tens of thousands of these things. But people who cannot afford collectible Ferrari’s decided this was the next best thing. Hence, the run up in price. When I look at any air cooled 911, in my mind, they are still a $10,000-$15,000 car. Nice cars, but not $50,000 nice cars.

I so agree with this and see it in car ads every day. There is a guy here trying to sell a Gallardo, has been for sale for a while and while it’s a manual which is both rare and valuable, he believes the colour, stitching colour combo, and other options make it worth $500k.

Really? I see that Mustang Mach E all over the place.

Then again I'm half an hour from Ford HQ.

Same. They're special and I love mine, but I bought it at $17.5k. I wouldn't dream of paying today's prices for it--I'd go after a Cayman or something.

Value = Performance / Cost

Rare = #Produced to Specific Spec or feature / #Produced on General Spec

Hey thats why I bought one lol They were the cheapest "exotic" car at the time. Still are really. A base miata is 30k now. Anything old and cool is rare to see out on the road anymore. Around here anyway

I doubt it, as I think the poster would have mentioned it. Probably doing the same as me, just window-shopping old car and bike sites. I’ve got almost no desire to go vintage again, but I still check out Hemmings and BAT every week or so. You see some crazy prices out there. Some car and bike forums I’m on have dedicated threads titled “What are they thinking?”

I also browse Zillow for my area and Chicago, and real estate is just as nuts.

Going back to the original poster's thought on rare vs valuable, aircooled 911's were made in adequate numbers for the market at the time but as time passes the market demand for such things has dramatically expanded while the supply has remained the same or declining as some are wrecked or lost. Thus the price of the remaining 911's (993's especially have been rising) due to low production numbers and demand. These cars aren't "rare" like the Hope Diamond, but scarce enough in the bigger world that makes them increasingly valuable. That they hold value at all is because certain auto enthusiasts hold them in a high position for excellent design and performance.

If you want it and it's rare, you're likely willing to pay more for it, or wait a long time. But even then, time is money.

I remember lookng at a couple 911 turbos back in the 90's. Out on Long Island and North Jersey. They were going for mid to high 20s.
It's beyond ridiculous what they are asking now..

There was a guy that had a worse than clapped out 1976 Pinto for sale in a Facebook Group about a year ago… he claimed it was rare because somebody told him that this car was the first ever Pinto. He wanted $15k for it. The trouble is that they made 3 million Pintos and production began in 1970 for the 1971 model year.

I didn’t balk at his price and offered to trade him for a ‘Wooden Helicopter Kit, some assembly required but all the hard work is done’…

This is not the exact photo that I used but this shows the exquisite workmanship and degree of hard work…

There were hundreds of comments and the ad was subsequently removed.

The value in 911s is that they’re “collectible” now, similar to American muscle cars like the Mustang or Camaro. They sold tons of each, but interest keeps the prices up.
