My son turned 14 today… and passed the written test for his learner’s license.
It’s official, he can drive on the roads now (not just the race track). ![]() On another note… 14 years of fatherhood. That went way faster than it should have.

Congrats !
I thought both my girls how to drive about 6 years ago. My older daughter moved to Arlington VA shortly afterwards for a year before going to school in Anchorage Alaska (learned how to drive in the snow real quick. Also had the patience to drive us through Toronto yesterday, about 2 hours to drive 5 Km. Made DC seem like a piece of cake. So far no accidents or tickets, knock on wood. Only issue is my wife says they drive both like me , LOL. |

Going to get your license on your 16th birthday was eagerly anticipated and an absolute given as a youngin...
It finally made us legal drivers on public roads

We took "Driver's Ed" in hs (classroom and driving), learner's permit at 15.5 (driving with parents only).
Many (like I'm sure yours did) had been driving for a few years by then on private dirt roads, etc. I just can't relate to the kids that don't eagerly await that "magical day" .... City kids

I remember going too get my license on my 16th birthday. I had been driving off road in a dune buggy my brother and I made from a rolled VW bug. I was very experienced buy the time I took my test. The Trooper that rode with me in my 1960 VW bug asked how long I had been driving. I told him alll off road sir but two years.

Nova Scotia ( and most other provinces) place the age for getting a learner's permit at 16. Years ago, you could operate farm tractor on the highway at age 14 in this province, although I don't know if that is still the case. Like so many farm kids, by the time I took drivers education, I could back up just about anything, but had never operated a vehicle with power steering. I was all over the road for the first few miles!

Absolutely! Got my learners permit on my 15th birthday and was first in line on my 16th Birthday. Missed the first couple of periods at school that day, but then drove my GTO to school. The beginning of FREEDOM.......

I remember when I took our son to get his drivers license at 15.5 years old. It was a big day for him. He’s 27 now and no tickets. He drives like an old man!

I remember taking DE in HS when I was 15, my driving instructor was also one of my teachers, Mr. Burnett. He was this cool young black guy, after a couple of blocks, he goes, "aw man, you can drive," and rolled down the window and lit up a cigarette. This was in 1974, mind you. We just cruised around, he gave me no instructions and passed me for the driving part of the class. ![]() I'm sure that it was more stressful to teach most of the kids who had never actually piloted a car before. My mom used to sit me on her lap and let me steer her '63 Ford Falcon wagon when I was about 6 years old, driving was just in my blood. I wonder if public schools even still have driver's ed? It's strange that a lot of kids don't care about driving anymore...nearly everyone got their license at 16 when I was a kid. Not just the obsessed gear heads like you and me.

Nearly every kid in my son’s grade 8 class has gotten their learners license within a month of turning 14… some took a few tries to pass the test. I can only think of 2 that have not got their licenses yet but I think this is more on the parents than the kids.

The only cars that our school had for drivers ed. were 'three on the tree' cars.
Anyone who wanted a license had to learn the manual.

I remember hitchhiking to driver training at my high school. Got picked up by a couple of girls in my same class.
