Is the GC over? Vingegaard was expected to get better as the race went on, but it’s not clearly happening, and should it? In 2023 when it was Pogacar who went into the Tour with inadequate preparation due to his crash in LBL, he didn’t get better in the later stages. Vingegaard is supposed to be better at altitude and we’re headed to the Alps, but with a weaker team can he put 3 min into Pogacar? Ok, Pogacar could bonk or get Covid - it’s really decimating the peleton! - or crash or have a mechanical. I’m rooting for Pogacar but I hope Vingegaard digs deep and keeps it interesting.

Pogacar's ability to accelerate at the end of the stage, uphill is incredible.

I seriously think it is time for the organizers to do something about the crowd. They have got to give these guys more room.

Agreed on both points.

I did see and it made me happy, one fan literally kicking another in the ass who was chasing after a rider!

Apparently fans make it into one long party starting way before the race comes through, so there are probably quite a few who are pretty “sauced” up by the time the riders go by.

Probably true. No other reason in my mind to run after the riders or to get within inches of their faces. It is surprising that there haven't been more accidents caused by the crowd.

So, predictions? You think Visma can crack Pogacar? Evenepol holds on to third?

flatbutt 07-17-2024 06:14 AM

They're just approaching the Cat 1 13 miles out from the finish. Pogy is +7 in the Peloton so obviously he's just gonna chill for a bit. Vinge looked rough yesterday so I'm not going with a prediction for today. Overall though IDT Pogy will crack.

I just noticed that they aren't using the studio commentators much today. I wonder if that's because Bob and Tejay were kind of chippy towards each other all day yesterday? Not much Steve and Christian either, so maybe the director just wants to concentrate on the ride. (It's a pretty interesting stage!)

flatbutt 07-17-2024 06:37 AM

I just noticed a police presence along the approach to the top of Col du Noyer and they were actively controlling the mob. Nice

flatbutt 07-17-2024 06:53 AM

Anyone else using Peacock experiencing intermittent loss of the signal? I get a pic of a wide eyed cat and must exit and re-enter the stream.

Helluva sprint to the finish today. The leaders really took the day to chill as tomorrow is supposed to be a tough route.

I see much more protection for the riders by the MCs today. Good to see that.

Vingegaard lookin' kinda Vingeslow today. Relative to his usual of course. :D

Unbelievable performance by Pogacar AGAIN! Wiping out a 3 minute gap uphill is unreal. As someone who constantly gets his butt kicked on the hills I am just in awe of the man.

What a heartbreaker for Matteo.

jyl 07-19-2024 09:43 PM

Wow, just wow. Smoked by Carapaz, Yates, Jorgensen so fast none of them could latch on to his wheel for even a meter. Put another 1:43 into Vingegaard and Evenepol. Pogacar’s dominance is total, he’s like a man among boys.

Vingegaard is getting worse, not better. A week ago he would have dusted Evenepol on a long climb like that. Today he could only follow. Visma has obviously abandoned his GC challenge, sending his key domestiques into the break to chase stage wins, leaving Vingegaard totally isolated in a sea of UAE jerseys. I think the team is being seriously disrespectful to a champion like Vingegaard.

Pogacar has won 15 stages in 5 Tours. So average 3 stages per Tour. Can he keep this up for seven more years to take the record? Probably not - 12 years at the peak of GC is not doable.

Gotta love Bobke......:D

#5 for Pogo.....and JV regains a little respect.

RC with another fantastic effort.

Just fantastic!

No alcohol on the hill, that will eliminate lots of issues. the cell phone has gotten out of hand. Fans that are none bike riders do not know how dangerous or the risk these riders take. We used every single inch of the road on the last couple lap fighting to get up to the front, including using the 12" wide gutter just to get around or take the shortest route to the finish and do not expect anyone to be there. When I raced Jr cat way back in the stone age, they let a driver on the course because she was going home. Since we were lowly Jy riders, the dumb officials was thinking it was no big but we crashed into the back of her wagon. The guy in front of me had his head down coming out of the turn and she stopped and he went through it and I went in half way after him. Smashed up my newish Gios. Put me out for a few weeks and I was cut up pretty good from the glass.

All I can say is, Pogo is da man. He's one tough cookie. Now you watch Remco. This young Belgium boy will shine as he ages in a couple more years. Can't wait.

Did you guys see the MC pillion rider give an almighty shove to one of the chuckle heads running alongside Pogacar and Vindegaard on the last bit? Priceless!

WSH 07-20-2024 02:42 PM

Not to be lost: although Pogacar stomped everyone out, he helped Vinny secure 2nd place

running along side riders on big mountains has been going on for ages but the cameras and the banners are the ones that cause all kids of hell for the riders especially for the sprints near the end. This is the kid of crap I am talking about ( see vid and I am sure many of you have seen this before but it goes way back where riders were seriously hurt and many careers ruined because of a picture they wanted) because I was involved in club racing and its a real danger after going through that car. It happened to me again on a training ride at the Rosebowl. dumb drivers decides to stop thinking its a good idea once they pass a large group hauling ass at 25-30 miles an hour. Happened to us this morning. We were rolling about 25-26 mph, truck decided to go around us to make it to the intersection only to make a right turn. Lots of screaming brakes and cussing this morning.

I saw it and there was another shove just prior.....:D

It was funny watching Vingegaard asking Pogacar to pull. Why would Pogacar pull? He’s been wheel-sucked by Vingegaard plenty, and he has no reason to help Vingegaard take time on Evenepol.

Impressive ride by Quickstep. I didn’t think they could burn off every Visma domestique and every UAE domestique but Almeida. Too bad Evenepol is not Vingegaard’s match in the mountains. But it’s only his first Tour . . .

I still think Visma is treating Vingegaard badly. It’s not like he collapsed, he’s #2 and won a stage! But you leave him isolated, just a mechanical or crash away from losing #2 and maybe the podium? That’s a heartless team there. They were going to screw over Kuss at the Vuelta, too. I am now a Visma-hater.

I really think Pogacar should do the Vuelta. He has a chance to make history, do what no-one has ever accomplished.
