I remember that one, leveled Homestead, Florida. The first hurricane I can remember is Eloise in 1975.

My first hurricane that I can remember was on the patio of Pat O'Briens in 'Nawlins.

It wasn't my first... not even close ... I just can't remember them

Never been in one ... still rated that high.... and don't want to ever be... nope!

I remember my parents having several "hurricane" glasses from Rosie O'Grady's.

I was a Project Manager for an environmental company that had multiple DOD/EPA/DERM contracts at the time. We spent several years cleaning up Homestead AFB and the surrounding Dade County assets.

Fun fact.....they had a weather station at the top of the South Dade Landfill (maybe 200 ft above sea level). It was designed/rated to withstand 250 MPH winds! It failed when Andrews eye-wall passed through.

First job out of collage was in ‘92. Louisiana edition of Andrew. Whew. That was interesting…. Helped out the Jaycees running supplies to Morgan City. No lights anywhere and a welcoming party of dudes (national guard) with machine guns.

I had quite a few relatives that were in So.Fl for a cousin's wedding when Andrew hit....

Nothing good can come out from attending a wedding ....

I just saw a local news report .... local pro golfer from my college got a call from his buds .... Linville area .... can you get us chainsaws. He loaded up his pickup and drove west .

I've got to pick up my new Scag on Tuesday....

I wonder how many Stihls he's got ... In the meantime I will being buying some containers, fuel, and 2-cycle oil mixes, chains, files, etc. and have them all ready to be used... and then I will deliver them an hour west of here.

That's MY plan .... 'cause I can't stay and help them... I wish I could.

I can't grasp any of this. I don't understand how a country with the assets we have militarily can't get food, water, and medicine to those who need it. We have massive helo's. How do we not have them loaded with necessities and dropping in the areas hardest hit?

Another fun fact....The National Weather Service Hurricane Center was located in a run of the mill 5 story office building on US1 in Coral Gables. Nearly across the road from Univ. Of Miami where I worked. The place was destroyed by Andrew. All their roof top antennas and satellite equipment was wiped off. After Andrew they built a concrete fortress down the road at FIU.

Apparently, the helos are too big. In remote areas, there isn't enough space to land, or power lines are in the way. They have to land at airports or large fields, then transport supplies to those that need it. Crazy logistics.

That’s not correct and a mere false talking point from the mainstream propaganda media…

Can't the stuff be dropped by parachute? I would think we could put boots on the ground to distribute and drop it in.

Seems illogical that one can’t create a clearing with some chain saws for a fob….

That's exactly what I was thinking. We can't get boots on the ground to clear a drop? I'm just not buying it. We have the tools and the manpower, we just need to use both.

There’s videos of locals using pov to clear the washed out roads. This is like day 9 now… there’s no excuse. Well, maybe they’re waiting for Halliburton to build a Burger King before they go in…

Good helo pilot could drop a pallet in the bed of a pickup without landing.

Alternatively, they could set a truck loaded with gear any place you like, how helpful would that be?

The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed for it's entire length.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/blue-ridge-parkway-closed-indefinitely-by-catastrophic-storm-damage/ar-AA1rIkAO?ocid=msedgntp&pc=NSJS&cvid=01d775cb6bde4341a431693875688d71&ei=19

I'm thinking that the resources assigned to the BRP should really be assigned to the towns that were badly damaged.

The article refers to the hit to tourism that this closure represents and I understand that tourism dollars matter but there's nothing for tourists to visit.

Maybe the BRP would be more critical for relief efforts?

Re BRP-In NC it could actually be used as a crucial road to access some, so it makes some sense to clear it. I doubt there are a ton of resources being used there that could be more useful elsewhere.
The Parkway is mostly high ground, so its likely intact other than some culvert washes and trees down.

Wow, crazy stuff! Sounds like a lack of clear communications between a lot of folks, and it sounds to me like one guy needed to relax and switch to decaff, but then I'm not "in the know". Maybe there's a great reason for what the guy did. But it sure seems crazy to me.

Looks like the assistant goober fire chief interrupted the interview. They should be more concerned about that Smoke detector hanging off the wall !
