Had a '67 midget in college. Rebuilt the engine one winter in my living room. Market today is going the way of old British motorcycles. Still wish I had my Austin Healy 100-6 or my '62 XKE roadster.Market till good on both.

That's very funny, I was able to put the engine on the engine stand by myself last night which was amusing. It's odd there doesn't seem to be much interest in these things even at the low cost of entry but the market moves in mysterious ways.

Speaking of cost of things, I sat down and went through the receipts for the metal work on this car that was done at a restoration shop in Sarasota. I don't know why it was pulled from there after being dipped and epoxy primed but I added up nearly $25k in labor and replacement panels. I had no idea he had this much into this thing!

fun shot here of the garage getting consumed with car stuff

I'm going to start shopping around the local paint and body shops to see who is interested in painting this thing.

Thank you, it was a labor of love for a number of years but its been worth it to cruise around down here. We take it out on the island pretty regularly for coffee or groceries or yard sales!

Since this car had two new quarters welded in I have to decide wether to keep the chrome belt line trim or fill the holes in the doors and front fenders. I guess I could always add it later.

I consolidated the rest of the parts not related to the suspension.

I'm planning on getting these cleaned up and painted as well as replacing the control arm and leaf spring bushings.

That is such a cool project, a rust free shell is a huge bonus!!! That thing would be like putting a model car together. Your garage is super cool, by the way, very nice collection.

The way the previous owner took it apart and labeled everything it is about the closest you could get to a real life model kit!

Top tip - powder coat > paint for the chassis and suspension components.

If I can find a decent guy locally that will do a big batch of stuff Ill probably do that to cut down on the tedious sanding of the contoured suspension parts but I've had good results with just rustoleum either brushed on or from a spray can.

I've always heard that if the powder coat gets chipped, then you have to re-powder coat the whole part again. Correct me if I am wrong.

In a way, yes. You can't really touch up powdercoat, that's mainly the reason why I've just used rustoleum on chassis or suspension parts. Sometimes I'll just degrease and wire brush the loose stuff and spray/ brush rustoleum right over whatever is left. I think the paint likes the coarse surface and adheres better.

You can use paint if it’s just a chip. BTDT.

But for suspension parts - imo - powder coat > paint. It’s just more durable.

The only spot on my [10 yo] frame is from where a jack pad slipped, and a dab of white paint has made it pretty much invisible.

I was thinking I'd just get this head cut and throw it back on the 1275 since I knew it ran when it was taken off the road BUT I decided since I'm going to reseal most of it anyways why not check a few things. The cam has several lobes that are worn pretty well and cyl 2 and 3 both have some odd pitting towards the top of the stroke. Cylinder 4 has some really weird scoring perhaps from a DIY hone job gone wrong. I'm sure it ran like crap with all these issues. I decided to call it a day as I do not have my large sockets here at home to pull the crank pulley bolt.

I pulled the axles and 3rd member from the rear axle housing but again did not have the large sockets here to pull the outer bearings so I'm calling it a day. I don't know of any other car you could put two drive axles, a differential and a cylinder head all together on one light duty cart!!

I have a great local powder coated, PowderTech-Plus in Orange Park. They use to be a Euro repair shop and built Porsche race cars, but they sent some 356 engine tin to a shop in California (this is when it was still a relatively new process) and it came back all warped (trunk monkey sand blasting most likely) so they researched the process, bought the equipment and built a oven to offer the option when doing engine rebuilds and suspension work. They have been doing my BMX bikes and components as well as wheels, suspension etc for the Porsches of mine since they started. I have not had any issues, but was around for the learning curves.

Some of my personal stuff
