Iv kinda become a british car guy. Got a 66 morris mini and now a 66 mgb-gt im fixing up. There is absolutely no reason to fear them they are extremely simple and easy to work on and all of the parts are available. I guess im a bit of a purist being that i would be very hesitant to update a powerplant and dispose of that simple lump of cast iron that can essentially go forever and be rebuilt indefinately. People shouldnt fear rust either. Getting too hung up on making a car perfect. Get it working and drive it. Enjoy it as the old relic that it is. Scrapping it because its not economical to make it perfect is not the thinking that should be applied to old cars.

Well said!

The 79 isn't necessarily costing me anything just sitting in the garage for now and I just can't bring myself to scrap it!

Not retarded. Cars do strange things to us. Just have fun with it.

I must say that the British sports cars I had in my youth gave me so much pleasure even though they were problematic. Not reliable, not warm enough in winter but were so much fun. Probably had something to do with being younger. Am enjoying the OP's pursuit......

Owning a sports car in the '70 made us all mechanics.
Car won't start?
Figure out the problem.
And get out your tools and fix it.

It has been so long since I was in touch with SCCA racing. Are MG Midgets desired for some racing classes, Like H or G Production? You could throw out a flyer on Grassroots Motorsports or similar publications.

I used to like the Austin-Healy Sprite. It was kind of like a poor man's MG Midget. Less of this and less of that - and made it lighter.

I had a TR6, and a friend of mine had an MGB-GT, and we drove each other's cars once. He was blown away at the difference in performance between the TR and his MG. I know the TR had more cylinders, of course. I always liked his car, but yeah, I liked the TR better for sure. Dad had a Spitfire in the early 70s, and Mom had a brand new 1977 MGB when we lived in Destin, Florida, so I have always had a fondness for British sports cars.

A friend of mine had a Spitfire for about five years or so. No breakdowns or mechanical/electrical issues ever. It was one cool lil' car.

When I started vintage racing in 2008, there were plenty of Triumphs, MG's, Austin's, Mini's and other assorted British iron running around. I have not attended in a few years, but I'm sure there is a still a decent assortment out there. Our regional club has had to update the car eligibility rules of "vintage" to include more modern cars in recent years. Longer term as folks age (and they were already old) true vintage cars will become a smaller percentage of the grid. It's worth checking out though if you want to sell.

I stopped by a friend's garage one day 45 years ago when he was doing a brake job on a MG Midget. I offered to pump up the brakes for him while he bled the system. Getting in was a challenge. Getting out was problematic as I was stuck! I was 6'3" at the time and simply couldn't get a leg out of the footwell. Eventually I managed to turn a bit and crawl out. Sweet little cars.
Enjoy !

Best

They are incredibly small cars, I had to turn this thing around in my garage and ended up just sort of shuffling it sideways myself which was quite amusing!

Right now, I have too much going on, and my Mother’s back surgery thing next week, along with her fractured ribs, are the Top Priority. If I have a opportunity, I’d still like to check them out.

9 hours in the truck but it's back home, an odd series of events but it's a complete rust free '69 tub with a truck load of new/ original parts and a set of mini lites.... more to come my British car friends!

Got it off the trailer and in the garage, now that I've gotten a good look at the tub Id say it's probably 90% or more finished. Looks like a few touch ups were made before the project sat but there's zero rust anywhere which is cool.
