That sucks. We're fortunate (I think) to be in a co-op for electrical service. They are very responsive. Although we just have to pay whatever price they charge. You either go with them or you don't have power unless you figure out a way to be self sufficient.

This gen was purchased by my buddies dad in the 80s. It still kicks butt. :D:D
Wow, that's impressive!

That's much better than having to wait until Friday. You've always got to wonder why some places take so much longer to fix than others.

The frustrating part was looking out the window and seeing lights on 2 blocks away that were on after 18 hours. All good now. :D:D

This has inspired me to get a portable generator for the house. One that’s just big enough to run essential items. We have hot water natural gas-fired radiator heat so it would not take much to run the water pump for the furnace. Add in the refrigerator, some lights and a TV and a 5000 kW generator should get the job done. That would also be enough to run a couple of window AC units. Should the power go off in the summer.

Enduring a power outage becomes much, much less stressful if one assesses the situation from the perspective of it being a short-term emergency. As a starting point, not even trying to maintain a normal lifestyle in an emergency situation is half the battle.

My weather app along with local news is calling for 5 - 6 inches of winter mix . I am really hoping whatever we do get is mostly or all snow . If sleet/ice is a good portion of that mix tree limbs will be snapping along with power lines . Sue and I are retired so don't have to drive anywhere . Good luck guys SmileWavy

We got another 4-6” on top of the existing 6” from over the weekend. FML I hate winter….

GH85Carrera 01-10-2025 06:21 AM

We ended up with about 4 inches. It was below freezing last night so the roads are all ice now. The sun is supposed to still be up there, and maybe make an appearance soon to help melt the ice.

No matter how much snow we get across the central USA it is a million time better that the fires in California with over 2,000 homes burned to the ground.

More snow coming tonight. I got lazy and did not clear all the snow off of the hard surfaces Tuesday. We had sun Wednesday that dried the cleared areas and partially melted the rest. Now it has frozen, and we're going to get more snow on top of it.
Ack!!

JackDidley 01-10-2025 06:35 AM

Snowing now. They are saying 4" or so.

Here in Opelika, we didn't get anything!!! Mom lives in Chelsea, and her yard and neighborhood look like a winter wonderland this morning.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...252056fd2a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...42d4ae086b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4d9e1ae620.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cb3aeec148.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7c21ff836f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f740d539bd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c0d5a7cea8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...29a6be6b43.jpg

Do you know what brand of generator you have? I have probably spent way too much time researching and I think I am going to go with Harbor freight. The reviews they get are just as good as some of the leading brands, and for the price, if it goes few years, I can just go buy another one.

Started snowing around 8 this morning . Lawn is covered and it's coming down pretty good .

rwest 01-10-2025 08:40 AM

So far in the metro area of MN our winter season has just been several nuance snow falls and one 5 or 6” snow that melted within a couple weeks.

We got maybe a half inch last night.

Kia, 3rd shift went home early last night, and 1st shift was canceled. I am on 2nd shift, and we are scheduled to work today. We will have to start things up, run production for 1 shift, and then shut things down tonight, which is ridiculous. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta is shut down, interstates all around Atlanta are shut down, and yet Kia is going to run production!!! Keep in mind that many people who work at the Kia plant live in the Atlanta area. They are calling for people in the Atlanta area to not be on the roads unless you absolutely have to. I shouldn't have any issues driving to the plant but I know a lot of people aren't going to be able to make it, so, I personally think they should just shut it down for the day. Lol.

I have a Coleman Powermate. Built in the 80s. I would be amazed if the quality would be the same.

The trick with the fridge is the startup draw iirc.

KFC911 01-10-2025 11:22 AM

It's starting here .... schools were all closed today ... they say we might get 1" .... it's been over 1000 days since we've had that much snow...
and it will stop by sunrise tomorrow. But it IS cold :(

stevej37 01-10-2025 12:11 PM

^^^ If you can make it through this storm...I'd wait until Spring to purchase a snow blower. (get a 2 stage)
They will be cheaper then. :)

Yes, pretty sure if I plug in the fridge first then other stuff it would be ok. I just took the fridge stuff out to the garage. Cold out there.

rfuerst911sc 01-10-2025 01:30 PM
