Here Comes The Snow!

Well, the snow stopped. Now we are getting freezing rain. Went out to the shed for the shovel and couldnt get the door open. Oh well, no shoveling for me tonight.

Had one day of slippery freezing rain. A few others with only an inch.

Pretty mild. And unnatural.
Our MI water is getting dropped somewhere else.

We had flurries for several hours. A bit of white in the borders between grass and sidewalks. Nothing showing up on the streets. It is 18 degrees, and wind chill of 9 outside. Toasty inside. I am very glad to live in the 21st century and have central heat and air. Just poke a button and tun the heat up if I wanted to. I just leave the thermostat in automatic mode. And it is NOT connected to the internet. Hackers will have the same luck hacking it as hacking my 911 or El Camino.

I've heard both here...not sure which is correct. Someone corrected me once for calling mine a snow blower.
Mine is a 2 stage 26 inch Yard King (old one)

I dont have a snow shovel. In the middle of typing this my power blinked off. My shovel looks like this:



I went out and got the shed open while waiting for my router to reboot. My generator is out there too and I may need it tonight.

We're, fortunately, much warmer down here in central Texas. Our home is a wood frame pier and beam home made by the original inhabitants in either 1920 or 1924 with no insulation. Some insulation has been added over the years, but it's still not fully insulated. Central HVAC (heat pump) was added in 1991, and we're still running that same system. Tomorrow morning when we wake up it'll be at least 74° upstairs, maybe a bit more. Downstairs will be somewhere in the 60-65° range because we aren't insulated will enough.

What gets me is what they did before 1991, especially in the first 20, 30, 40 years.

When I lived in Japan we used one like that except it had a D handle. But we only used it if there was ice that had to be chipped or were shoveling stuff deposited by a snow plow or maybe if the snow was REALLY wet and heavy.

What we used was more like this

These were also common but didn't work great in heavy, wet snow or really deep snow.

Thanks. I will have power and heat. In 2009 we had a storm and power was off for 5 days. I did not have a generator but I had an inverter. I let my car idle for most of that time with that inverter. I had light, TV and internet when they were not down . It used a bit of gas but I was warm and entertained. I did leave my food and beverages buried in the snow out back.

Nice! Hopefully, you don't have to resort to that but it's good to know you can if you have to.

Lights have flickered 5 times in the last 5 minutes. It may not be a good night.

It went out at 12:41. Now running on the generator . Gas tank is not real big so I am not sure how long it will last. I think I will crank the heat up to about 77 before I go to bed. That may let me sleep a while after the generator runs out of gas.

Good luck Jack! Tho' very rare here, once a decade or so we have a nasty ice storm with hundreds of thousands losing power .... my longest outage was mebbe 12 hours ... same with my parents' house ... over the past few decades. My friends a few miles away were "last to be restored" 20 years ago ... 11 daze with no power ... they were campers so no problem. Later they discovered they had gas logs in their fireplace ... that worked .... doh !
