This has become a hot-button topic with me. Pre-teen kids zipping around town on Ebikes capable of doing 30MPH have become a serious traffic hazard around here, since they regard stop signs, traffic signals and lane markings as mere suggestions to be ignored whenever it suites them. Many ride without helmets, sometimes even 3-up on a single bike. They'll steer with one hand while staring intently at their phones, and are prone to make sudden unpredictable moves without warning. It's not uncommon to see groups of 4 or 5 kids all doing wheelies down the middle of a lane in fairly heavy traffic. It's easy to see why this county consistently ranks high in vehicle/bike accident rates, with Ebikes sprouting up here like mushrooms after a spring rain.
This isn't much different than an un-licensed, un-trained kid being turned loose on the streets with a motorcycle. I don't understand why so many parents are buying their kids these rather expensive, and potentially dangerous, toys in the first place. Most kids have nearly unlimited energy and can surely ride a pedal bike practically anywhere that an Ebike will take them. These same parents will then complain about how dangerous the roads are for bicyclists, which is like wondering why your 12-year old is now addicted to social media after buying them a $1k smart phone.

just yesterday. a kid...a teen came up next to me on an E-bike. it looked like a dirt bike. but really lean looking. (that barely made sense)

he looked at me, put one knee on his seat and popped the most effortless wheelie I have ever witnessed. he stayed there next to me and my Tacoma, just going down the road. no gas engine starving of oil..just blleeeeeeeeeeeee...silent ass wheelie. it was pretty cool.

shorts, tank top, no helmet...hahhaha...kids. I never got that good with a wheelie ever in my youth. i bet we were doing 30mph!

Ebikes are another technology, like self-driving cars and now AI, that got out of the gate before regulators could get a handle on it.

I just saw a news report here in MN that a new State law is treating any E-bike over 1,500 watts as an motorcycle and they can't be ridden on bike paths etc. it must be licensed and insured when used on public streets.

I think they were smart to get ahead of the problem before it got too big to manage.

Not sure how they determine the wattage though? maybe manufacture's specs and I suppose testing if a modified one causes an accident?

I'm sure almost every kid around here has a buddy who knows how to hack these things, and I'm going to need his name for help when I get one.

I was a UPS dropping off packages, and two or three kids on E bikes were riding in the parking lot. One was doing a wheelie as cars were moving in and out of parking spots. No helmets in sight.

We never did stupid **** like that!

Get off my lawn!

Tell a kid that 18mph is what they are limited to. Or else.
See what happens next.

They have become extremely common with the kids in my area. So much so that tickets and confiscation are happening regularly along with accidents.

Kids hanging out in groups of 20 or more, taking over the local McDonalds a'la The Wild One. Running red lights, wheelies down the street, dodging in and out of traffic, riding on opposite side of the road, etc.

You really have to watch out pulling out of parking lots, they zip by at 35 mph heading the wrong direction on the sidewalk.

I'm all for kids being kids and getting outside instead of gaming in a darkened room. But they need to get them educated on basic traffic laws and safety, maybe some type of insurance policy or parental responsibility when found at fault with property damage or injury to pedestrians.

It starts with the parents. If the parents pretend this isn't happening or don't care it will never stop.

Yes, look at the so called Teen Takeovers , call it what it is, a Riot and should be treated as such.

Clearly the Palm Coast area is a Hot Spot for e-bike crashes
