I don’t have any place to store a trailer. My property is the size of some of your patios. The truck might get 1,000 miles in my ownership. It will do lumberyard, Home Depot, dump runs. LWJ and KFC, thank you guys so much for your generous offers - truly Pelican-core there. I hate bothering people at 7 am Sunday “hey I need yer truck”. Found a ‘99 F150 4x4 4.6L Lariat 125K miles very clean no dents supposedly one-owner $4,800. Small exhaust manifold leak (common with 10th gen) which is a $700 fix. So I’d want to pay less. Going to check it out. More than I want to spend and don’t care about 4x4 or clean/no dents but figure will make it easier to sell. We were always a “Ford family” growing up. That concept must not exist any more. I had a ‘65 Mustang and an ‘86 F250. The only new Ford that I’d buy today is a Maverick.

4x4 will definitely make it easier to sell. Something to check with exhaust manifolds, I replaced cracked manifolds on my Ram with headers and saved a few hundred bucks.

This is mine. 460 V8.
Paid $6500 a few years ago, easily 10k or over today. I don't need it often, but when I need a truck, it does everything well.

As said many times about Porsches, there are no cheap pick up trucks. Ones that have been used and look like it may not be appealing, but those are the only low price for what you get trucks. If the mechanicals check out then that's a good option. Try and find one that has just passed smog and the tags have at least a few months paid up because commercial vehicles are expensive to license.
When you go to get paperwork at the DMV expect to be hit with 10% so a 9K truck is a 10K truck at the end of the day. |

Used pickup trucks are always more expensive because even a rusty beat up truck is valuable as a work truck. Cost more to buy, but you will get most of your money back. Buy something ugly to get the job done and then sell it with a sign.

Try this:
![]() I am serious. There are some really nice units: Search foldable trailers . I will be getting one when we move to South Carolina and after 30 plus years on a farm, I know what I need for .72 acres.

How about a used gov auction pickup...
They auction off a ton of them in Fairfield, CA, and in many other states. https://marketplace.gsafleet.gov/

I have an 8 foot bed in my F350, and it has come in handy a ton. I would look for an 8 foot bed F150.
Or an old 70's square body Chevy would be cool, and the long beds are worth way less. That would be easy to sell too. Not sure about emissions there in CA so that might be a pain. Probably better to look at like what you posted. |

Not the answer to your question, but I think you would be money, time and effort ahead by getting a dumpster and demoing everything first and then get that out of your way and then pay for deliveries as needed.
Sure, It’s nice to just run and get materials, but building materials are heavy and you will probably need to get a helper each time you go. Remember, you will need to have insurance on the truck and pay for fuel as well. I have never owned a truck and have built a deck, replaced a garage and reroofed my house. Although I had a hatchback and brought all the deck materials home in that- bunch of 14 ft boards in a Geo Metro! Got flipped off by a pickup driver- he was going the opposite way, so I wasn’t causing him trouble- just annoying how much I could carry I guess! Menards delivered the whole garage order and unloaded it where I asked.

what's the sold prices?
Gov planet has some rusty trucks out in Maine. 5-9k seems to be the going rate for a beater.

My 2001 Tacoma. Small, hauls a lot, fun to drive as a manual, everyone asks if I want to sell it at gas stations, Home Depot. Perfect small truck.

I got talked into driving 30 miles south of Akron and getting a full size organ out of a house. A Saturday morning Denny's breakfast pal says, Oh, I've got something.
Pulled that organ with a 2011 CR-V and one of those trailers with a Class I hitch/ball set up. Once finished, fold it up and tuck it in against the wall in the garage.

Done. Bought the F150 mentioned above (actually a ‘97) for $4,000. Not issue-free but drives very well, looks nice from . . . 50 feet? or 10 ft with cataracts . . . and I don’t think I’ll bother to adress its issues, at least not until it’s proven itself to otherwise be a good truck.
The fold up trailer is cool. I don’t actually have a car with a tow hitch and connector . . . have never pulled a trailer . . . We are talking effete urban dweller here. Last edited by jyl; 09-08-2025 at 07:41 PM.. |
