Video - 4 generations of GT3RS drag race and braking
I think the tires on the 992 must be very moderate compared to the 991. Something was clearly going on.
I know a bunch of you will come to gripe about 911s being raced in a straight light. Yes, it's true, they don't shine in a drag race, but it's fun to see the 4 GT3RS side by side, and to hear them all at full chat. I would be perfectly happy with any of them, even the "slow" 996. Honestly, I'd probably prefer the 996 or 997 over the other two since they are manual and should be more analog than the 2 newer cars.

I had seen that, very cool and agree just seeing them lined up is awesome.
I will stick with 997 RS |

Drag racing those cars seems crazy. They all are track cars, not drag racers. Lots of cars would smoke them in those drag races. Back in the days of muscle cars, 11 second 1/4 mile drags would be super fast, and not a good car to drive on the street.
The real test would be a lap on a real track in the hands of a good driver, and all on equal tires.

I would never launch mine like that, but then they do not seem to drop the clutch or anything and take it easy on the 996 and 997.
I am positive the newer ones would smoke the older ones on the track, but be less engaging with the PDK. There is a reason the older ones have held their value so well. |

Pretty meaningless but kind of fun to watch. I don't think everyone behind the wheel knows the definition of a Gurney, though.
(I also think that the drivers should wear helmets for these high-speed runs in close quarters, but that's just me.)

This would have been a great setup for one of those virtual races, each car with it's best lap with the same driver and then overlay the videos in editing to see how they compare head to head.

That was fun to watch. I would not kick any of them out of the garage.

I would take the 996 version . Not the fastest but probably the best analog feel .

These guys aren't TopGear. I guess they are similar to the Haggerty videos, but on a MUCH lower budget. I believe many/most of the cars in the videos are private owner cars that were loaned (or in some cases driven by) the owner just for the purpose of making these videos. If the option is a video like the one above, or no video at all, I'll take something where I get to see and hear the cars is better than nothing. It is impressive that these days street cars are fast enough to absolutely SMOKE the old muscle cars that had been prepped and somewhat intended specifically for the drag strip.

If anyone ever gets out to Colorado in the warmer months, I’d be happy to share the 997 experience with them.

Saw this and the performance envelope of all of these cars is just eye watering. Yes 996 was the last variant with no nannies so it is a very visceral driving experience. At this performance level it is also the one most likely to get wrapped around a telephone pole as well. Having nannies to keep you from dying in one of these monsters is not a completely bad thing. I think my Cayman GTS 4.0L has a similar performance envelope to the 997 GT3RS and it is just fookin' scary on a public road.
Every time I open her up I think "yep, I am probably going to jail today." https://fastestlaps.com/comparisons/m18pgc0ef5n2

I think the braking test shows how skill is much more important than brake performance especially on cold brakes where bigger heat capacity doesn't have much benefit. Anyone can put the gas pedal to the floor but putting everything you've got into a brake pedal at high speed is real skill.
I thought I was pretty good at braking until riding with an instructor into turn 12 at COTA. I thought I was on the brake pedal 100% in my car but quickly learned I was nowhere near it.

Braking skill and tire grip matter a lot. With a really fresh set of race tires I can brake in 2/3s the distance compared with 200TW endurance tires.

Entertaining but hard to take seriously as it comes down to the driver launch and skill. With the roll race, none of the cars were really even bumper to bumper and same with the braking from 100 to zero.

I'm in the market for a sub 10,000 mile LO or UV 991.1 GT3RS if anyone knows of one.
