another WAG- Slipping transfer case clutch.
It's sending power to all, then one, then all, giving the sensation of slipping.

Counterclockwise?

Makes sense since he can push the car a foot or two with it in gear and not running?

I do not think it is the transfer case clutch, pretty sure that is only attached to the front drive on that car with the drive to the rear wheels being straight through. I'm still thinking rear half shaft, or somebody tried to steal the catalytic converter and attached the rope to the driveshaft by mistake and it is gone.

Here's what mine looks like. That's where the front axles get pinned in. Can anything in there fail causing the slipping? I've driven the car like it is for at least 50 miles, 30 of that was on the freeway at 65mph with no odd sounds or vibrations. Strangest symptom is the MPH following the RPM when slipping with no change in actual speed.

From what I looked at, the speed sensor is located near the rear of the transmission, so likely spinning correctly there. The output flange is likely attached by a spline, usually very strong and more likely to break the shaft. Trying to turn each rear wheel while transmission in 1st should point to the problem.

The car did it for me. ![]() And admittedly, I didn't check the rear closely enough. I just looked while under the middle of the car to see they were there. After all, I never touched that. How could that be the problem? Quote:

Good to hear you found the problem, and easier fix then clutch. Not sure if you need new half shafts do the joints feel ok? It is strange that they are able to pop out.
