in a natural disaster or worse. think fellow man will step up and help?
humanity. I am asking about humanity.
the recent anti-freeze shortage thread has me thinking about things. as a society, I am not so sure. hahah. let me back up. in my first wildfire, my house was in a area that was "suggested" we evacuate. I was packing up and my next door old lady neighbor elected to stay. my wife and I decided we should as well, since I could drag her stubbornass out should we need to. a local grocery store hooked up generators and kept the lights on. free coffee, and free breakfast burritos to the last hold outs. I still shop there despite the higher prices because of the thoughtfulness. I think things have changed a bit. my bud sent me this from Austin. hahah...people cleaned out the store!! nothing screams "me first" than a run on a grocery store. I can live on soy sauce and rice for a month. or drive away to a safer location and eat at a Denny's. what gives? do you think when SHTF people will help each other? or lord of the flies?

There are folks that are always 100% selfish. There are folks that are often very selfless. And then there are most of the rest of the folks that fall somewhere in between. I think in every natural disaster, I hear/read about folks that are out helping others. I think that will always be the case.
Yes, many/most folks will panic ahead of time. You do also have to take care of yourself or you won't be around to provide help. I think most folks get caught up in the frenzy and do stupid stuff (like buying a years supply of toilet paper), but ultimately, once things are going bad, most folks will try to help other folks if they can.

Living in So Cal as long as I have, I often wonder how things would/will be if/when the big one hits here. I'm talking a 7-8-9 magnitude quake that takes down most if not all of downtown LA and surrounding area buildings, liquefaction of the area I live in down here in the OC.
I used to think we'd be living in our shed if worse came to worse, if we were to survive. Our e-quake kit out there hasn't been looked at/updated in at least a decade or more. We don't have any spoons, so keeping what we do have would become problematical because of the have nots that do have them I fear. I also wonder if the rest of the country would come to our state's aid if such a disaster were to hit.

In every major natural disaster that I've heard about in the last 20-30 years, help has come from other states, many that are no where near the area of the disaster. I have no doubt that other states would be sending aid if Cali had a major issue. In all of the wild fires, don't firefighters from all over the country converge on Cali? I don't know why an earthquake would be any different. After floods, hurricanes, fires, etc..., you always either see or hear about first responders from all over the US traveling to the location of the issue.

If there was more Vash in the world, it would be a much better place (although we would probably have an ecological fish disaster from over-fishing)

If history tells you anything, looting will be out of control. AFA humanity helping each other, in times of disaster, most will be good people. It will still be dangerous for many.

Depends on the neighborhood? I'm lucky...not lord of the flies here. Very cold here last night. Danger of pipes freezing...Cindy forgot to ask the lawn crew to cover the faucets. I freaked..gawd, how I hate being a recent cripple! One panicked phone call at around 9:30 PM, brought neighbor Cody to us, headband light in place...he took the foam cups, covered the outdoor faucets for us.
Overall, I think "Zeke" pretty much nailed it...

Scott, if the big one hits, we will be stuck for a bit. Our only way out will be the 10 or 8 down south. Going north on the 5 will need to go through those big bridges if they fall over just like it did back in the 70s, we are stuck. Then there's always angeles forest hwy. I am talking about services to come in.
I have seen videos of guys in face mask going into Autozone taking 3-4 batteries and just walked out like if they are owe these items. I do not trust them and there are too many movies made about this so they learn from it. We are in the same boat, no spoons. I'm not sure what my neighborhood will become? My immediately neighbors should be fine, a peaceful bunch but my worries are the riff-rafts down the hill. |

I believe many folks have the following priorities - family first, then others.
I think those hold unless maybe the family is far away and there's someone in dire need in the immediate vicinity.

This is the time where reading people is important and your life experience come into play.
At my parent's house, I know the neighbors are good. A bunch of older, established folks. |

My guess is that there are 5-15% that are 100% selfish, and everyone else would be willing to lend a hand to some extent.
