Emma Aicher, Silver, is a lovely person. I met her at the Frankfurt airport this fall.

Amazing skiing today by all of the competitors.

Hoping for speedy recoveries for Vonn and Becerra.

I think you mean the "classic" or normal/old-fashioned method.

Those skis have enough bend (camber) for the bits underneath the feet to not touch the snow when gliding. Only when you kick down on each stride does that part of the ski contact and grip the snow to shove you forward. Fancy wax voodoo is involved.

Us hack XC skiers probably have "fish scales" in that section of ski base which directionally grip to stop the ski from sliding backward when you kick. You still get the benefit of the camber to keep that textured draggy bit of the ski off of the snow except for when you're pushing down on it dynamically. Some old crusty skiers use skis without scales and stick to wax, typically on their wooden skis and they'll tell tales of the romantic aroma of pine tar mixed with sweaty wool.

Skating is faster and usually requires a groomed path. You can do the old kick-and-glide most anywhere.

And now I've probably mis-explained something complex enough that each of those teams of athletes you see on TV each have teams of pros keeping their skis in the right tune.

I have both styles of XC ski. My OLD skis have a hickory bottom that I had to coat with pine tar so that the wax would stick. However climbing had to be done with the herringbone technique. My new skis have fish scales which prevent back sliding and as stated forward grip when kicking. I never did the skating style.

Thanks for the real world explanation! Wish I lived near some place to do that regularly. Seems like an awesome activity.

It's a real workout. Yeah you need some real space for it. I live near a forest preserve with miles and miles of trails.
Back in the day she who was but is no more and I would backpack into the ADK, make camp and ski thru the High Peaks.

Here (for no other reason than it's a fav of mine) is a pic of her carrying her skis into the Mt Marcy area.

Have they shown Simona Di Silvestro?

rfuerst911sc 02-08-2026 10:17 AM

Quite the run by the German to win the gold ! . I could be wrong but I don't believe women's bobsled has run yet .

Cool, congrats Team USA skaters!

I like how drones are being used, definitely unique camera angles.

After receiving her gold medal Breezy Johnson was celebrating and jumping up and down . The medal detached from the lanyard and hit the ground and cracked into three pieces  . At the time of the incident officials and media were unsure if a replacement would become available . Sheesh what a freak thing to happen .

rfuerst911sc 02-09-2026 05:38 AM

Men's ski slalom on now is a dog fight . Lots of lead changes .

gregpark 02-09-2026 08:35 AM

Speaking of dog fights, my favorite olympic race is the head to head X games style free for all. Can't remember what it's called but boarders and skiers both. A bunch of racers released at the same time by a BMX style gate. Lots of contact and entrants going down. Now that's a ski race

As I watch the winter games most of the time I'm thinking "you crazy f#ckers!"
