We moved a data center 3000 miles across an ocean. With judicious caching and decent telco links it was possible to make it decently usable - but we had to rewrite a couple of the more chatty apps. Speed of light can’t be mitigated.
I’ll bet he can do it. I’ll go out on a limb and guess he’ll mesh the satellites for distributed processing to scale it. |

Stories like this make me miss the days of Bell Labs before they were broken up. I sometimes wonder life would be like if all the brilliant minds needed for digital telecommunication were still kept under one roof. There are still brilliant minds doing amazing thhings in America and around the world, but how many times does a lack of communication slow the whole chain of events down because there wasn't someone in the room to say "Remember, if you move your server farm 500 miles away, you're going to need to adjust for the time differential"

I glossed over one ‘problem’…
I’ll say in advance it wasn’t my idea. I thought - and still do - that it was a really quite dumb way to save a few $. One of the apps we had to fix screenscraped text to download large reports - 10-20mb back when that was genuinely large. 3270 screen - so you got 2k at a pop. When a turnaround went from 2ms to 68ms you can imagine that the client was loving life… |

It'll never work, the earth is flat, global warming will kill us all anyway, and Musk has never accomplished anything he said he would.
Glad that's settled. |
