I realized I'm really old

I was at a pool party yesterday when a good friend of mine mentioned that her fiancee is three years younger than her. She's 46, and he's 43. Yes, I know that's not shocking. Here's what is. It dawned on me they were both born in the eighties. The Dukes of Hazzard, Magnum PI, second gen Trans Ams, the song Another One Bites the Dust, Blondie's Call Me, and Star Wars, are all older than either of them.

I felt freaking ancient. I graduated high school and was married before they were born. Hell, I was likely divorced well before they were out of diapers.

Even though a lot of life has happened to me since 1980 I still wonder. Where did all the time go?

So how about y'all? When did you realize you're freaking ancient?

I have coworkers who were born over a decade after I started working in aerospace.

I try not to think about being ancient.

When you started working in a different millennium than the one you are [still] working, it starts to hit.

LOL! I am starting to see folks that are probably in their 30s saying that younger kids are starting to say "you were born in the 1900s!"

So yeah, think about that, kids that were born after 2000 could have graduated college, gotten married, and had a kid by now. It's not like they are still in primary school.

Standing in the delivery room watching my daughter give birth to my grandson this past February. Somehow 28 years went by since I was in that same room when she was born. Seemed like yesterday.

I helped one of our newer physicians with a tricky procedure. He was fellowship trained, having done this for years. But he was having issues with this specific case. I knew a few tricks that he had never seen or heard of- case was successful within a few minutes.
He asked how I learned that approach??
Turns out I have been doing these procedures since before he was born.
I felt really really old.

I know I'm old, but I don't really feel old (57) I can't even pin down what age I feel like. I go to a weekly swing dance were the majority of people there are late teens and early twenties and they accept me as one of them - mostly.

I have to constantly catch myself before using something as an example that happened way before they were born, like lines or scenes from movies and TV shows.

I'm 80 and still climb trees. Going under a 18" crawl space with girders I have to get under at 10" is about the only thing I dread. For that I just take a handful of painkillers beforehand.

Now carrying a 97 lb. bag of cement will drop me in my tracks. So I have a lift and a crane for those when I was moving 500lb machines.

There are a couple positions lying under a car the have to be well thought out to get on my feet once rolling out from under. You learn to take every possible tool and have some nimrod standing there asking for the tool you are telling him you need to keep from having to come out from under the car.

Which you eventually have to do if you want the right tool; you told him exactly where to find it, They often don't get close. "Will this work?"

"I think I heard your GF telling you she's horny. Better go." I just set up jobs now with no timely completion obligations unless the water or electricy is off. I take a break every hour.

BTW, how did you like that Talladega race today? I took the afternoon off. Now go cook dinner.

I realized I'm really old

When I hear guys in the Porsche club talk about the 914, and how they are really old cars (yeah, I know they really are) but I bought a 74 914 brand new.

I saw a sign in a restaurant that said to buy alcohol the date of birth on the driver's license must be today's date, in 2005. Really, 2005 was 21 years ago. The math makes it so, but it just does not seem right.

I've known I'm ancient for some time, but the realization really hits when I look in a mirror. When I turned 80 a few years ago, I thought I was doing pretty well, since I could get out and do what I've been doing for decades mostly all day long. But in the last few years I've slowed down quite a lot. Old age seems to be the reverse of development as a young person, only faster in the opposite direction once you hit a certain point. Mostly I realized ancient crept up on me when I had to start taking a break (or stop) after working only a couple of hours.

Never considered myself as the OG at work, however when my coworkers were born a time after I started the job, it did make me go
And then when they were showing up younger than my youngest, it was a moment like this…..
