If I go about a mile West, the Walmart is right on the “border” of nice neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, so certain items are locked up. If I go about a mile East there’s a Target in a nice area that doesn’t have much locked up, but I really don’t like Target. We have a Walgreens right by our house with free range inventory, and a much nicer Walmart if we go about 4 miles Southeast. So for us it depends on location.

I’ve been to the full lockdown stores in not so nice urban areas like LA and SF, no thanks.

An interesting related anecdote, a friend used to be a local cop, and one of the PD side gigs was security at Dick’s Sporting goods, which apparently has big time shoplifting issues. He said they tracked theft, and stationing a single uniformed officer at the front door reduced theft by about 80%. But then they decided they couldn’t “afford” to pay for it anyway.

I walked away from Walmart 25 or 30 years ago.

I am always afraid someone will take my picture again and post it on the Walmartians web page.

Our local Walmart has ammo/jewelry/some electronic items locked up . Everything else is open to the public .

Stores like Walmart track lots of data , including shrink/theft . If a store consistently goes over a certain % of theft then lock down is put in place . I can't say that I blame them but I also don't like it . Blame your neighbors .

I don't go to that many stores and the ones I do go to I haven't come across anything I have needed locked in a case except my local Rockler woodworking store that had the router bits locked up- understandingly as they are small and expensive.

Same here in Dayton, Ohio. They have the blue plastic shopping baskets too. I guess we are behind the times here in the sticks. We need to start stealing stuff!!
I walked away once. I needed an SD card that was locked up. I asked floor walker to get it. He looked at me and nodded, then kept on talking to someone, laughing and carrying on in a way that said he was not another customer. In that case I walked away.

The Walmart here also has ammo locked up as usual. I once needed some pellets for the Benjamin pellet gun I have and found those to be locked up as well. I wanted them so I patiently waited for an associate to unlock the case.

I think the replies here are being very critical of stores that are trying to survive.
Why take it personally?
Do we want all the brick and motor stores to close and let Amazon completely control our purchases?

I'm glad I live somewhere that this is not a problem. None of our stores have any of these items behind security glass. I'd say get your politicians to fix our area's crime issues (good luck, sorry).

We used to have stuff locked up but it's long gone thank god. Tide and Crest were the only things that were for me but still. I can see toothpaste but a gallon of Tide should be hard to steal from Target.

Only thing I've ever bought in Walmart is tallow for fries. Not a Walmart fan since they pay so little a lot of workers are on food stamps.

I put "walk away" unless I absolutely must have it and don't have another source nearby. Fortunately, I'm not normally shopping in places where stuff is locked up.

Yep, Amazon loves shoplifters...and the politicians allowing it..

If I need it I wait. Not the store's fault, but that's a discussion for another forum.

I think there’s a lot that could be done for theft deterrence that many stores don’t want to do. As I mentioned earlier having uniformed police is a big one that’s proven to work. Instead ours has private security that’s either a fat slobby woman or an ancient old man that drive around in a truck with flashing lights. Watch out thieves!

I’m not a fan either, but there’s certain stuff that they are the best source for locally. Normally we hit Walmart for a few things, a local farm to market grocery store for produce, a local butcher for chicken and pork (we buy beef in bulk), and maybe Whole Foods for fish or misc.

Ours pays $14/hr to start per their banner by the door. That’s not much but it’s better than fast food for our local market.

+1 This makes sense for high theft items.

Walmart in Akron, Ohio would not allow me to put a locked up $17 Wahl beard trimmer in my basket after hailing an associate. "Do have more shopping to do, sir? It will be at register #9 waiting for you to finish."

Depends what the item is, and how big the store is.

I stopped going to Walgreens because too much of the stuff was locked up and there were no circulating store associates. CVS is much better.

Home Depot has most power tools and batteries locked up. I understand that, even though it is irritating to not be able to hold a tool and feel its weight and balance. They also want you to "ship to store" for more and more stuff; sorry, I'll buy from Amazon then.

Local hardware stores sometimes lock up stuff, but two of the four I go to don't.

Costco locks up almost nothing. Ditto grocery stores.

Oh man, few things make me madder than standing in a retail store and being told I have to order it online. Walmart (common theme) will sometimes advertise prices online that are “online only” even for in stock items. I once tried to buy an in-stock tv for the advertised price and was told that I need to buy online from my phone and could then come back in four hours and pick up said tv box (that I had in my hands) at their online order pickup area. Just for spite I drove to Best Buy and price matched the online Walmart price.

I live in South Lincoln. Not much of anything is locked up in the stores here. North Lincoln? That is a whole nother story! People would steal the whole store if it wasn’t attached to the ground.

I do agree with locking up the high end scotch. After seeing the price I was ready to smash, grab and run
