Blind spot monitoring/ alert systems are on many vehicles because so many drivers have no idea of what is around them and the space their own vehicle occupies. In addition, it's hard to comply with a Yield sign if you don't understand the concept. Some folks just aren't wired that way. I watch for people like that and try to give them a wide berth.
Someone had to say it:"That'll buff right out!"

When I started reading, I thought for sure you were going to be talking about 526 from West Ashley to 26 westbound. That interchange always amazes me.

I will always get in the lane that is not merging if I can help it. But I also am perpetually nice and risk-averse, so I let the merging people in as well.

It sucks she was hit, but there is literally nothing you can say that will change the way she does things. Honestly, she has been hit, and she will still drive the same way.

The fat 'B' and 'C' pillars on new cars aren't helping either.

That's what it sounds like to me.
I did something like that once. It was two lanes turning left and maintaining two lanes. I drifted from the inside lane into the outside lane in the middle of the turn. Nothing came of it except a pissed of driver who gave me the finger. In my defense, I was in a city that I'd never been in before and the lanes were not well-marked. I just didn't know the lane beside me was also turning.

my wife is an adult. she can do what she wants. we try (hard) to keep the lecturing from each of us to a minimum. she has honestly had less traffic "encounters" than I have had, so she commands the better position anyways.

I have to close my eyes sometimes when she is choosing a parking space in a crowded lot. I dont open them until I hear/feel her park. hahah... love the lady.

sorry for the troubles OP. taking turns at a zipper situation is the key to success, but that is rare.

Both sides of the highway almost perfectly clear like I was the only car on the road that beautiful evening. I look over out of habit and there are headlights in my blind spot. Braked hard.
How in the bloody h*** did that booger get there?
He must has merged with his lights off in a dark area, because that completely went un-noticed.

In her defense (partially) to play el diablo advocate:
1) Unless an out-of-towner, he also knew the lanes would be merging and should have positioned himself in between cars.

2) Unless she was aggressive, sped up and cut over fast, the likelihood that he was being a jerk handing out lessons is not out of the realm of possibilities.
Either way don't post her driving habits on the internet.

At faults in this household(over 40 years):

Wife hit 3 deer. I totalled a 944 turbo on the track.

Testosterone vs bad luck.

Interesting as to fault. I was taught 'Yield to the right of way" (person on right) but per today's convention (google search) :
Quote:
No, the driver already in the continuing lane generally has the right of way

Maybe I'm missing something but, unless there is a witness or video of the incident, then usually the car that was hit is not at fault. The only other factor would be if you are in a no-fault state.

This old joke somehow fits this thread...

A newlywed couple was in their honeymoon suite on their wedding night. As they were undressing for bed, the husband tossed his trousers to his bride and said, "Here, put these on." She tried them on, but they were way too big. "I can't wear these, they don't fit me!" she said. "Exactly," replied the husband. "I wear the pants in this family, and I always will. Don't you ever forget that."

Smiling coyly, the bride picked up her trousers and handed them to her husband. "Here, try mine on," she said. He tried to put them on, but he could only get them up as far as his kneecaps. "Hell," he said. "I can't get into your pants!" She smiled at him and said, "Exactly, and if you don't change your attitude, you never will."

My wife had a minor fender bender back before we were married. After 34 years of marriage no tickets, no wrecks. Defensive driving all the time. She has never in her life had a speeding ticket.

I have not had a ticket of any sort since the last millennium, it was back in 1978. No wrecks since a lady ran a stop sign and tagged me. I really thought she was stopping back in 1976. Now I am much less trusting at stop signs.
