my first introduction was my earliest visit to Japan. it was offered to me at a Japanese Breakfast place. the lady sitting next to me (counter service), gave me the oddest look when I gave it a sniff. I had an actual question mark floating over my head. with zero language between us, she slowly prepped her portion. squeezed in some sauce, and she started whipping it up with her chopsticks. she did it slow and deliberate so I could watch. she then plopped the entire portion over her rice and took a bite.

I copied her moves and it was so friggen good and interesting!!

NATTO!! fermented soybeans!! stringy and sticky, and damn hard to eat with chopsticks without coating your face with spiderweb like strands. the lady next to me smiled at me, and I ate my wife's portion as well. now I can get it at a Japanese grocery store. it is a superfood. healthy.

with hot rice, it makes a great breakfast for me. it tastes like mild soy sauce, with a tiny bit of cheese funk.

Good Feta cheese is my thing. I mostly buy Greek made but Bulgarian is really good also.

Back in the olden days, when I was a kid, I was taught to eat rice with butter and sugar on top.

I was at summer camp and a counselor walked by my table and said in the stern voice, "you are going to eat that!" just as I was finishing adding the sugar. I looked up at him and said was expecting to sir. He thought I was just playing with food.

Now as a geezer that sounds gross.

When I first moved 900 miles from home to become a real adult, I used up all my saving in the move, and numerous utility deposits, and first and last month rent for my apartment. I had single digits in my checking account. I was very broke.

I went to a local grocery store that sold Asian rice. I had brought a Panasonic automatic rice cooker my mom let me have as she had several. I ate rice with Kikkoman soy sauce on it. About 4 cents per day for meals. On payday I would splurge and put a can of Hungry Man soup on top of the rice. Between all that rice, and lots of potato soup, and spaghetti, and macaroni and cheese I managed to save enough to move into a much nice duplex.

I still have some of those old cloth rice bags that I washed, and used as rags. I would buy the 10 pound bags of rice. And no sugar on my rice then.

When we were kids we'd bite the end off of a black licorice twist and pour in a Pixy Stik. It was a weird combo for sure, kind of grosses me out now when I think about it.

I never heard of natto when I lived in Japan, but I was a kid, and my parents would have been pretty unlikely to try it.

Now that I'm aware of it, I'd love to try it at least once out of curiosity. I eat plenty of fermented, stinky food (even make my own), but the texture of the "snot" part certainly looks off-putting.

I had not had one in decades, but when we visited Hawaii last time, I made a point to buy a couple of bags of them at a local grocery store. For some reason the local stores don't carry them.

Shortly after we returned home I was mowing the yard on a really hot 100+ degree day, and just soaked in sweat, while sucking on one. It was about down to just the pit and I started wondering what the ambulance drivers would think of an old white man with a peach pit in his mouth if I had passed out.

I have never been close to passing out in hot weather, so it was just a mental image.

I looked into ordering some on line, but it required buying a year's supply. I just went cold turkey, and gave them up.

My wife loves Durian, but while I've tried it I will never eat it again. If you can get past the smell, it is considered delicious by many.
It is banned from airlines and many hotels around the world due to it's smell. Needless to say, she knows I will not kiss her after she has it.

I've had fresh, raw oysters, but I'm not a fan. I'll eat cooked oysters.

I've had sliced beef tongue, and it was very tasty, but I don't care for the texture.

I eat sushi (raw fish, raw shrimp "ama ebi" along with the fried head).
I eat chicken livers and calf's liver.
I've eaten a bunch of stuff, but yeah, there are things that I'm not likely to search out to try. I don't have any interest in eating a balut. I don't have any interest in blood or blood pudding or sweet breads, brains, fermented fish (Scandanavian), testicles, or bugs.

I remember watching my mother cook it....boiled the whole tongue until it reached a certain temp and then peeled it. The coarse outer layer was thrown away.
Then into the fridge until cold....then sliced for the sandwiches. Mayo was a must.
And also remember the house stinking after the boiling.

Maybe you had some that hadn't been peeled?
