I thought it was a great commercial and if you're gonna call the boxster "new crap", bear in mind the spyder is the fake porsche in that commercial! I know it's popular to deride the boxster on 911 boards, but as a guy who's owned several 356s (the only real porsche!), 911s of all ilk (all eras except a 964, don't like those) and a boxster, I tell you that the Boxster is the one I miss the most! The handling on that car is by far the best of all Porsche products ! Wait till the cayman proves that and buries the 911s !

![]() Boxster vs 550 (Beck or otherwise) is like comparing a Honda gullwing to a 70's cafe bike. The boxster weighs twice as much as the 550. . . has a much higher CG . . but hey, that boxster auto-tranny has to be nice. ![]() . . .but, since this is a random pic's thread; here is a shot my pasenger took of THEE Beck used for the road shots in the Boxster ad: ![]() .... the Beck's owner had me follow him to a 356 bull session. . .in his 356. . .. another fun (more fun to drive than a Boxster) car. YMMV

I'm not trying to defend the ad, I just liked it, it was funny....
To your point... What other car ever made by Porsche resembled the 550 more than a boxster ? Sure it's heavier, but hell, it looks more like one than a 997 does... All Porsches are heavier, tell me a 997 is not heavier than a 901! If they want to use this link for advertising, why the hell not? Like I said, it's no skin off my back, I am just saying the boxster is often criticized by people who never drove one, on account of having been too popular. The fact is it's a great car to drive and with a similar engine to a 996/997 it will bury both with superior handling ! I think the Cayman protos are already faster around the 'ring than a 997... I just loved getting into "not a real Porsche" discussions with the sectarian 911 people when I had my Boxster, because I could usually turn right back at them and tell them their 911 was a fat pig of a car compared to my other (and only "Real") porsche, a 57 356 ;-) Of course I was just being facetious as I love all 356 & 911s (except the 964) and currently drive a 73.5 T ! this is what i was responding to...

I was very hopeful that, way back, that the Boxster would be the "Club-sport" type of machine(light, low GC, low cost) . .. what we got was "Malibu-Barbie."

Exactly what I was talking about before in temrs of pompous 911 owners who never drove one in anger... Don't judge the car by the people who bought it... Lots of pricks bought 911s too, just to look good... You kinda will get your wish with the Cayman, there is a club sport model coming... As a 356 guy, I too love the beck spyder, but it's more of a fake than the boxster no matter how you slice it. I'd love one, but it's a fake ! |

given the choice, I'd take a fully specced Beck, disc brakes and all, over a Boxster anyday. Maybe even muscle in a wild 2.2-6 in there....
The Box. Coupe is another story... |

From my POV the name/badge on the machine is not what makes the machine. I do reallize MANY see things just the opposite. . .. Porsche, for example, has appropriatly badged BICYCLES! . . .fer crysts sakes! I suppose them "Porsche Bicycles" are much more "Porsche" than that Beck will ever be, too. ![]()

I don't care, if it is what it is. Reproductions badged as originals are a misrepresentation. My pet peeve. All those fake Speedsters that have Porsche badges. They are not a Porsche. Badging it as that is a misrep and the only one you're fooling is you. Hence my statement. Now I would respect them if the were badged R-E-P-R-O instead of P-O-R-S-C-H-E. Makes me want to pry the badge off them when I see them. I don't mind if you love your car but let's call it what it is. Would it be OK to put Harley Davidson on a Honda?

Beck has his own badge, IIRC.

island I don't mean to sound pissy but repros are a pet peeve. Like T's badged as S's. I'll take a nap now.....I'll wake up better.

Yes, how offensive that somebody create an affordable, mostly-faithful replica of a classic car that is essentially unobtainium.

But what I'm saying is; who cares about "the badge" . . .if you look under the skin, the Beck is very much in keeping with the engineering vision of Porsche. (the boxster is not) That's what I see, anyway. So what about those "Porsche bicycles" ? . . .they are actually made by Trek (or some major brand) and re-badged by "Porsche." So.. . if I go out and buy a Trek, repaint/rebadge it . . .is it any less a "Porsche bicycle" ? hmmmm ![]()
