Could that be an impact crater?

That was the common thought since the '30's ( it was discovered by a mail pilot flying over it in the '30's). But core drillings in the late 1990's discovered it is in fact a volcano that lost it's pop just before the magma broke the surface. It's located in an area that is rich with flourspar deposits.

Plus it's probably on the New Madrid fault line. The big one's comin'!
