i'd say that was from a car accident. the suture lines and bruising imply a fracture across both cheek bones.

There is a better reason. The picture of the USS Missouri is thrilling.

Army commanders have a special kind of love for field artillery, and the reason is this: Once the projectile has left the end of the barrel, there is not a technology in the solar system that can stop it from hitting its target. Plus.....with a good forward spotter, artillery is stunningly accurate. Any Army commander will tell you "Give me some infantry and some artillery, and I can capture any real estate you want." Defense is futile.

And Navy ships can sit off the coast and rain ordnance all day. Once the target is acquired and "spotted in", ship motion makes no difference. Just cruise back and forth until the Gunner's Mates drop from non-stop loading. Truly something to see.

I'm told they can rain ordinance a distance of something like 25 miles. A ship in port in Bremerton can destroy Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma and probably Everett.

The range of the 16" guns is about 23 miles. There were some experimental rounds and powder that reached a lot futher ( 30+ miles ) but it was very unstable and unreliable. Never used officially. The 16" guns were only installed on the 4 Iowa class battleships and remain the largest guns ever deployed on a US warship. The Japanese battleship Yamoto had 18" guns but it was sunk in short order during WWII. One of the most amazing sights of my life was watching the rounds leave the barrel during gun trials off Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. We could see the rounds as they disappeared into the sky. They left the muzzle at 2100 feet per sec and if we looked in the general direction of the barrel angle, we could catch up with the rounds. Mind you, they are 6ft, 2000 lbs. Simply awesome. I was a FireControlman and operated/maintained the MK 48 ballistic computer for the 16" guns.

And uh, it's ordnance, not ordinance.
