You won't hear me argue, the A-10 is a great plane. But it's not a cheap plane to operate either. I'd love to see the USAF adopt an armed reconnaissance/light attack turboprop, like the OV-10 was used in Vietnam. Much of the work that the A-10 does over in the sandbox is ISR work, its total overkill for the job.

I know it isn't cheap, but I can't imagine anything else being able to cover and loiter better right now.

Hasn't your company been working on a COIN aircraft similar to the Embraer?

Yup, I spent significant time on the program. As of now, neither has many fans in the USAF. Too much jet bias, not many prescribe to the "less is more" philosophy. A turboprop actually has much greater loiter time than a jet due to much lower fuel burn, especially with a couple of external fuel tanks. You won't be dropping JDAMs with it, but is that really required to take out some insurgents in a Toyota pickup?

Hopefully Textron's new Scorpion jet finds some favor.

I know the A-9/A-10 specs originally looked at turboprops. It's funny how the armed forces are sometimes ruled by style rather than utility. I think the turbofan was the right choice on the A-10. THese have a pretty good loiter time:

The predecessor. It must have had an enormous loiter time as it has it's own toilet.

Stargazer2006's imaginary aircraft

Quote:
The French SIPA (Société Industrielle Pour l'Aviation) imagined in 1955 a small twin-jet business aircraft called the S.500 Vedette and developed from the smaller S.300 turbojet-powered basic trainer. The only prototype flew for the first time on June 16, 1956 and showed promising enough for SIPA to start promoting it with several potential customers. However, the Vedette , despite its being a clean and pleasant design, was not looked upon favorably because of its high estimated operating cost and also because of the crash of the S.300 prototype a few months before, so that the project was brought to an abrupt end in February 1957.
