That bike is a replica copy, not one of the 2 from the movie. There are many, many copies.

One of the 2 was demolished and rebuilt,.. it's in another museum.

The other was stolen; never found.

From Wiki:

"A motorcycle on display at the EMP Museum in Seattle, Washington is identified by that organization as the original rebuilt movie prop. A replica resides at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa.[23] Many other replicas have been built since the film's release...:

Malcolm Smith rode pentons in the ISDE back in the day. woods endure bike. I can not confirm, but I believe they later became what we know today as KTMs.

I believe you are correct. As a teen, I had a 175 that was branded with both Penton and KTM logos.

I currently have one of these tucked away in my hangar. Haven't ridden it in years, but I keep it for purely selfish reasons.

That bike burial is probably cheaper than a worthless coffin.

Sort of. John Penton contracted with KTM to make bikes for him. Up to that point, the biggest things KTM was producing were mopeds. Towards the end of the 70's, KTM took over the Penton business, if I recall correctly.

John, and his son Jack, visited Tulsa a few years ago to attend an ISDE reunion. I happened to be visiting a local motorcycle dealership owned by a good friend when they pulled into the parking lot to say hi. An old, original Penton had recently been discovered here and they spent a good half hour looking at it. It was amazing how exactly they were able to date it by looking at certain components and remembering exactly when those entered production.

There is a recent movie about Penton, worth a look.
