Honestly, the local aviation community feels "that is the intent". If the owner drives off the aircraft, then they can sell the land for development. Sad times...... Atlantic located at KMHR now charges a fee if you taxi onto their apron. It's just seems to be getting worse.

"Good brakes", Bob mused, casually talking on his 'phone, "But certainly not great brakes."

There is a rendering plant wayyy out past Rancho Cordova that has been there since 1955. Now developers are building McMansions out in the area, and now the new residents are complaining about the smell. DaFuq? They're doing the same thing to Sacramento Raceway, and complaining about the noise. These facilities were located in BFE for a reason - to keep them away from people who would find them obnoxious. If you didn't do your due-dilegence to find out what industries are in your new neighborhood, that should be on you. The idiots who bought houses out near SMF are doing the same thing.

Exactly what happened to Natomas Airfield, an old agg strip turned local airport. Where I was able to log some Decathlon time before............

Houses got build near and the phuctard residence complained so much they closed it. Ah, hellloooo, pull yur heads out and listen for the pop! You bought a house next to an airfield and then hate airplane noise?!?!?!? WTF!

Now.........

I was in the office one time when the crew doing core sample drilling stepped in and ask "when was there rocket fuel stored here?" That kinda explains the soil contamination due to the agricultural business that ran from there for decades. Now, new homes are built there....Bahahahahahah

That's when they need to move in a vintage military aircraft club or something. They need to have a bunch of these things flying around.

Man I hear ya. All those high dollar homes in El Dorado Hills and their precious lifestyles, some very loud and boisterous residence who tug on local politicians ears, currently complain about UPS air traffic going into Mather Field with an occasional T-38 or U2 from Beale AFB. Even attempting to redirect over "other" areas because if affects their quality of life. Most of those mokes have no clue about the time it was an active AF SAC alert center back in the day with the B-52 Buffs coming and going all hours of the day and night.

All pads use to be staffed with fully locked and loaded

God forbid their delicate sensibilities and smartphone lifestyles are interfered with. How quickly some can forget the sacrifices others have made to provide those freedoms.

Some times the wants and needs of the many outrank the rights of a few. If they can use their version of "eminent domain" to get what they want, then they will justify their actions. The world is changing. That dirt is much more valuable for the development of their utopia than to to let some silly old airplanes (toys) hog it all and keep them from achieving their goals.
And now to get my tong out of my cheek before I bite it off.

Having a unique area near living areas is beneficial...but the idea just needs to be sold to the public.
"We pilots are not your enemy to be conquered. We are your friends."

Perhaps preservation of the airport could be sold to the public by making it an amusement area with airplane rides, a flight or mechanical school, go-karts, storage, turning hangers into factories, or whatever sticks to the wall? Or stream the airport coms on the internet so people could listen in? Or work with them collectively at community meetings to limit and make flight paths/times more acceptable as survival sometimes requires.
-Something to make having an airport nearbye "hip and unique". Travolta has his.
-Kids love airplanes.
-Something THEY possess in THEIR subdivision that OTHER SUBDIVISIONS do not have.

A few years back there was a movement by 'environmentalists' to take out Argo dam on the NW side of this town and thus return Argo pond to a thin river so the fish could swim upstream. There was a bit of populous talk of the elite UofM Rowing team keeping the pond for themselves. That didn't happen, but the same was achieved by adding a series of cascading pools to bypass it which has now become very popular with young kayakers from all around. Having the pond for reserves would be essential for drought or hydro-electrical generation should the need occur. It absorbs heat during the summer. There are many positive reasons which people just didn't consider before until it was explained.

(and finally more gab and pic sorry)
Ann Arbor used to have a creek going through the west side before it was put into pipes underground.
There was recently a movement to bring it back to the surface and put a throughway area right downtown(central park, goldengate park, san antonio river walk, etc).
Regardless of how big the city got in the future, there would always be a pleasant little bit of nature a few blocks away.
