Until recently, WalMart asked "is this for a pistol or rifle" for 22lr ammo, since for pistol you have to be over 21, rifle over 18 (now they enter your DOB and let the register deal with it). Same on occasion with a few other calibers (9mm, etc).

I always replied "Neither - the ATF considers a machine gun to not be a pistol or a rifle"

Seeing the look of either confusion (what do I enter on the register?) to fear (machinegun!) or both was always fun... even when I wasn't meeting a buddy with a tax stamp.
