It shouldn't take a study to find out that a room for special occasions primarily gets used for special occasions.

I mean, it is like holding a study on carrot harvesting machines to find they only get used for the part of the year when carrots are harvested.
I think you have a good awareness of the situation, but fail to see that many others do not share the same awareness.

I say that a study helps convince people that they don't need rooms they are not using is useful.

People in general lack such awareness and need help in separating out the wants from the needs.

You can have that Jag and minivan combination, or drive a really posh performance SUV, life is full of choices.

George, we have a formal dining room. It has my grandparents old antique formal table and the chairs in there. Along with other antiques. We have had dinner in there just a handful of times since we moved in 20 years ago. We can get out the fancy dinner ware, and silverware but what the heck for?

It is just a pretty space to impress guests. I agree it is useless. My wife will disagree with you.

Happy wife = happy life. End of debate.

I can so relate.

Years ago (maybe 20) when playing with some early concept designs for our own modest "dream house" I showed my wife a scheme that had two arm chairs in front of a fireplace. I explained to her the history of the parlor, a room that later became known as a "living room", and said it was a place to greet a guest without walking though the rest of the house. And all you really needed was this small space so that the family room that we would actually use could become much larger.

Toughest client ever, no sale made.

25 years later in the same house with no living room at all, just a family room you would think she could admit something, like that design was fine at least it had a living room.

We lived 25 years without one, and it still isn't enough evidence for her.

Ha! I'll get back to you when I can afford a house with two living rooms! We live in a big rectangle divided in half, front rectangle is one long room, kitchen, dinning room, living room. Back rectangle is two bedrooms with a bathroom between.

Hey, don't you have a room for just listening to music?

Has anything changed that this is often par the course of the interior of cars with families with young kids?
I see exceptions, not often. Vintage artwork sometimes indicates it once was otherwise. Bare metal interior vs cloth?
