OK here is my first moon shot..

Already I know I need a sturdier tripod.

Also It was a pretty humid night.. lots of moisture in the air..

Way to go Tim! Where was the moon when you took the shot. I am pretty convinced, that when the moon is lower, you are shooting through more atmosphere and that makes the image fuzzier. I have been waiting until the moon is almost straight up.

As for tripods... if there is a center poll that will raise the camera up (after the legs are extended), keep it all the way down. Raising it, can cause more camera shake. If you have a lens that has image stabilization, turn it off while on the tripod. Most of the IS (or VR) go nuts when the camera is steady on a tripod.

Lastly, what were your settings and lens?

Dave

P.S. Try not to press the shutter with your finger - this will add to the camera shake. If the camera allows, use a cable release or use the timer feature if possible.

Dave, here in NY the moon is at 12 o'clock now I took that pic at 10:30 or so and had the camera pointed straight up..

If I'm not describing this correctly.. when I went outside with my camera.. I had to look straight up to see the moon.

I used Sigma 70-300 at 300mm 400ISO f16 125/sec

And my tripod is pos that I usually mount my lap timer on... I know I need something more substantial

My cam doesn't have IS.... its a Pentax istD

funny now that I am looking at the pic again the south pole is in focus..

Now that's just being lazy.

Does the Pentax have the ability to sharpen in camera? I set my D100 to standard. I have to go to Photoshop and use the unsharp mask to really bring out the definition. We share the same Sony image sensor btw.

Friday is the full moon, but during the day.

Tim, change the aperture, something more like f8, you can take a faster exposure or reduce the ISO to 200 which will reduce the noise in the photo. I've got the same lens. The moon is so bright, that the tripod being super sturdy or not shouldn't be a big deal.

If you see a halo around the moon when you look at it with your eye then there's enough humidity to affect the shot.

Also, it looks like the focus is a bit soft which would affect the shot. Keep practicing.

Steve, I agree that dropping to ISO 200 would help with the noise, but the sweet spots for a variable f stop lens should be around f/11-f16. The last shot I took, was a lot sharper right out of the camera. As for the noise, I had some as well and I cheated. Quick mask around the moon and paint the noise away.

Dave
