I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago.

Kind of UFO-ish water tower in Barton Hills.

Today I hiked around the King Gillette Ranch. What a spread -- SoCal living for the early 20th century ultra-rich! It is now a state park and right down the road from home. (The top pic shows just a tiny bit of the total property, bounded by Mulholland Hwy which you can see about 1/3rd of the way down from the top.)

One of the most stunning locales in the Santa Monica Mountains, 588-acre King Gillette Ranch is situated in the heart of the Malibu Creek Watershed, by the confluence of five major tributaries, and adjacent to Malibu Creek State Park. This scenic parkland at the lower end of the Las Virgenes Valley is a haven for larger mammals of the Santa Monica Mountains. At the same time, it offers a rare unspoiled view of California’s rich archeological, cultural, and historic resources, including a Chumash settlement, and nationally significant structures designed for razor magnate King C. Gillette in the 1920’s by Wallace Neff, architect of California’s Golden Age. (Quoted from web site).

Himeji-Jo. Very cool. I went there one winter.

Is that the original one, or otherwise rebuilt in wood??

Osaka-Jo is made of concrete apparently.. And 2/3 the original size.

Ran is an amazing movie. They did now how to have a civil war those folks. An amazing martial culture and most of the time no external threats.

It's original/restored. The wooden beams in the castle are amazing. Here's my homage to Kurosawa shot:

Here's Ryûmon Taki (dragon gate falls) in Kinkaku-ji:

I'll see you Kiyomizu and raise you Ryoan-ji:

"Ryoan-ji is most famous for its karesansui (dry landscape) Zen rock garden, thought to date from the late 1400s. It is one of the most notable examples of the dry-garden style — some say it is the highest expression of Zen art and teachings and perhaps the single greatest masterpiece of Japanese culture.

The Zen garden is an austere arrangement of 15 rocks on a bed of white gravel. The moss-covered boulders are placed so that, when looking at the garden from any angle, only 14 are visible at one time. In the Buddhist world the number 15 denotes completeness. So you must have a total view of the garden to make it a whole and meaningful experience, and yet, in the conditions of this world, that is not possible."

Don, I was going to going to see your Himeji, and raise you a Hikone, a Sanjusangendo, and an impressive, historic-looking gate in front of a crappy concrete office building, but I'm getting an "exceeding 100KB limit" mssg while uploading.
I'm out, no pics.
