Kind of looks like a Merlin Falcon.

German V1 bunker @ Eperleques, about 30 miles from where i live, just across the French border..

Translaton :

right plaque:
" People, please be humane
to the brave American and English aviators who died in these parts
An affectionate tribute by the community of Eperleques."

the left one says
"People please unite
To the Belgian political prisoners, to the forced laborers , Belgians, French, Dutch , Polish and Russian"

Can't read the rest well enough from pic to translate

That's how close the 40 prisoners stood in the railway boxcars... later on they packed 100 in there.. about 35000 forced laborours worked to build the bunker. Including some folks from my home town.

That "dent" top left, is from a Tallboy... Even those couldn't penetrate the main bunker.

the onsite Concrete mixing factory, it was bombed, killing Belgians working there, some folks from my home town are known to be buried in this pile.

It looks so much bigger in person.

That door is thicker then my car is wide...

Very sobering Stijn. It must be very very sobering to live near that and not just see pictures and stories in books.

ps. You have the V1 and V2 reversed. The V1 was the airplane like bomb. The V2 is the missile

Bah, Yosemite. Just a bunch of rocks and trees. That's a lot of nice counter tops just waiting to be cut in those hills.
(j/k, nice pics)

It's actually the first time i've seen it up close, and it was very moving to walk there in a place that can only be described as one of the first mechanical, weapon of mass desctruction intended for civilians... That it's sad to realize that mankind has been very good at finding ways to kill other people..

Another thought that came to me, inside the bunker, the engineering that went into this site... I've seen it now that half of the place is bombed to pieces, but when it was intact, under construction but almost ready... it must have been an amazing place.. Bit like the big U boat bunkers in France..

Sure, there are bigger installations in the world now, but at that time, as far as high tech warfare, it was a biggie.. It would not have been, or still not be out of character to see this kind of place (unbombed) in a James Bond movie..

and you're right about v1 and 2, i know which ones are right, but i always keep mixing them up.. for some reason my mind prefers V1 for the ballistic missile..

Never forget.

My great grandparents died in Auschwitz. My mother and her parents were arrested and put in a cattle car that traveled for over a day. It mysteriously stopped in the middle of nowhere and then returned to her hometown of Augsburg where they were release. They came to America shortly after that in the end of 1938.

One of those 'moments I'll never forget' was the first time I met a man with that tattoo. Really made the Holocaust real.
