How did you manage to get the lighting on camera? Just take a lot of photos and hope you get lucky? It would seem that if you pressed the shutter when you saw the lighting it would be too late. What kind of exposure settings do you use.

All this is not very relevant to me in southern california but I am just curious.

I believe the normal procedure is to set the exposure to a long period of time, potentially minutes depending upon conditions.
