I posted on here last year with a pic of a guy re-roofing his home using galvalume over his existing asphalt shingles. He was doing it himself. Now across the street and caddy corner to my place, there's a crew doing the same thing on a neighbor's house. I went over and chatted briefly with the foreman. He works for a local roofer who got the referral from the company that supplies the galvalume....whom I have also purchased from.
I am planning on doing my roof the same way this fall/winter. My roof is very simple, unlike my neighbors! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490228741.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490228741.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490228741.JPG I like the plain galvalume look but you can also get colors. But the regular galvalume would reflect heat the best. You can also get different styles of sheeting...like standing seam. The ones used in the photos are just called ribbed. |

That is a cool look Baz, would love to have a metal roof. Especially if we could trap what rain we get and divert it to a storage tank for yard use. However, our 12/12 pitch and three story roof access (back side of home)would be challenging to say the least.. the perils of living on a hill https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...183eb874b4.jpg Today Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Long cold night. Moisture leaks in and builds up in the insulation and wood rafters. A stockpile of moisture. Then comes a blazing hot afternoon. The moisture is at boiling point and wants to push out upwards anywhere it can. Here is the problem. What allows that trapped moisture to escape between the layers of roof? Those wood spacer strips run sideways. Cheap pine also rots. The massive heat and moisture wants to travel up vertically. But there is no path available to the outside. |

The roof is really not intended to leak. It can if improperly installed. Don't know how he is venting at the top of his trusses and roof structure. Random. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490359841.jpg |

How far over the edge do they extend the metal so the water goes into the gutters and does not just loop back up under the roof edge? Did you see any mesh/foam/expanded material at the edges to prevent insects from entering the ends of the rib flutes and making nests? I'm imagine the galvalume look is best at hiding bird droppings and other staining as well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490361550.jpg |

You are probably thinking along the lines of those foam strips used when installing the corrugated fiberglass panels. The panels are installed so that they extend about 1 inch past the edge of the existing shingles. I also think there is a new drip edge installed along the bottom edge of the roof before the Gavalume panels are installed. I ran across another house getting this same roofing upgrade here on the island. Same technique. Really saves a lot of labor removing the old shingles..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490653127.JPG |
These people are nuts. That bed is way too narrow for putting in a new hedge. I always give my plantings a very generous spacing.
No wonder so many landscapes end up looking like doo doo after a few years.....no consideration for after care! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490653430.JPG Then they go ahead and plant 7 gallon Podos. instead of 3 gallon ones....sheesh.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490653430.JPG |
Here's a job I did a couple years ago....check out how much space these Podocarpus have and how well they have done....
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1490653788.JPG There's a boatload of utilities behind them I wanted to hide and these have done the job well! |
Some project pics from the above job.....you see all the utilities I wanted to hide:

Sorry about the poor quality pics....taken with my point and shoot using telephoto in early morning light.
Two raccoons frolicking in the lot behind my house. Unusual to see raccoons out in daylight but maybe they felt safe in this location. Must be a male and female....they had some pretty good wrestling bouts which I didn't catch on film. Cute little beggars.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1491167744.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1491167744.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1491167744.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1491167744.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1491167744.JPG |
In my front yard is a very tall palm tree trunk with no top on it. It used to be a Washingtonia robusta palm, which lost it's head a year ago due to the palmetto weevil. Anyway....I left the trunk up in case it was something the wildlife could use and sure enough some woodpeckers have made themselves a home at the top. I'll have to figure out how to catch some live action. Maybe a trail camera would work.

June of 1971. We finally made it to the top. Had quite a parade following us up the pass. We were pulling over to let folks pass whenever we could.
