North Cascades getaway
Again...
Something very addictive about this area. I've fed my addiction 5 times so far this year. Since it's only 1.5 hours away to solitude on a 1,600' elevation lake (OK, really a reservoir) and 6,000' to 9,000' elevation peaks I just can't help going for a fix fairly often. This year so far: 1 back-country ski trip 1 day hike 1 overnight backpacking trip 1 carry your own kayak down to the lake overnight trip 1 yearly 5 night extravaganza (3 nights tent camping, 2 in a floating cabin) The 5 night trip involves towing my 1986 Lund aluminum boat to one lake, launching, loading and boating 5 miles to the base of Ross dam, unload and do the load-unload dance a 2nd time (takes an astounding amount of gear, food and well... beer for 5 dudes to survive. Then pull the boat up onto a dock, lift and carry it to a flatbed truck, load all the assorted junk as well. Hop on for the ride up 500' and 1.5 miles. Unload everything, toss the boat in Ross lake, reload the boat and gear, then another 5 miles up lake to a boat in camping area. Set up camp, go explore , have a nice campfire, food and well... a beer or so. It's a heck of a day's work to go relax. Boat in the flatbed: ![]() ![]() On Ross heading to campsite (we rent a 2nd boat for safety and ease of transporting all the gear/people) ![]() Gear headed to campsite: ![]() Then enjoy a well deserved beer: ![]()

Climb a peak or two, my BIL summited Little Jack (6,700' 12 miles and 5,100' gain/loss round trip, not bad for a 66 year old, he complained about stepping in fresh bear poop near the summit) and the boys (25-26 year olds) climbed to Sourdough Lookout (14 miles and 4,300' el gain/loss round trip)
Sourdough LO across the lake: ![]() ![]() Jack (9,075') left side, and just to the right Little Jack at 6,700'. Colonial Peak to the right. ![]()
