A 40 minute drive and a mile of tidal flat/bird sanctuary wandering puts you at Craft Island.
It's a big dang rock out in the Skagit delta where it meets the Salish Sea.

Flats were not too muddy and exploding with flowers, cattails and mind bending distant vistas. Nice and quiet save for a couple overnighter kayakers, several mums and a small tassel of kids under 8 years old... and Navy Jets, ours thank goodness.

Easy enough to put plenty of distance on the kids and mums once we navigated up over part of the rock and down onto what seemed limitless beach made of sand ground out of the North Cascade mountains by the mighty Skagit. An absolutely amazing expanse of shallows, mud and sand.
Covered at least a mile of beach and could have gone much further if we wanted to do a little wading here and there.

Beautiful. I always love your posts! I remember my first time in Seattle was May of 2000 for work with one other guy. When we had downtime from work, we just drove around at random and ended up in some neighborhood near water somewhere south of Seattle. Every yard and space was green and there were flowers everywhere. Another day, we drove to Snowqualmie. Another day we drove to Mt Ranier, and then kept going to Mt St Helens. (we got there ready to work, but the environment wasn't ready/prepared for us to do our work). The things that I saw and did that trip really made an impression.

Some mushrooms from the yard.
These looked super delicate

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627530287.JPG

this is the same mushroom, but on 2 different mornings. I think this same mushroom lasted 4 or 5 days which seems pretty unusual

not quite as delicate looking as the first.

Now in this case, it's still a Ford innit.

Having some breakfast.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627667065.JPG

Many years ago, I had a photo of a smaller one of ^those^ eating an assassin bug. Then within a week, I had another photo of an assassin bug eating one of those spiders.

And a tiny cousin hanging out on one of the other flowers.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627667065.JPG

I'm not sure where he though he was going?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627667065.JPG

I've got a nice camera with nice lenses, but 99.9% of my photos are taken with my phone. It's always on me and takes pretty good photos. It's an amazing time that we live in.

Speaking of spiders. I grabbed these shots while mowing the lawn several weeks back.

And then on another occasion a couple of weeks after seeing the tarantula, I saw a tarantula hawk flying around looking for a victim. Its body had to be 2-3" long.

I am addicted to riding trains. Private rail cars are the best way to go but owning one is worse than a large boat. Lots of maintenance cost. So, I mooch rides off of friends.

Sorry to go OT on this, but is there a ride/tour that you can do by train where they have "cool, old" style cars and service?

svandamme 07-30-2021 02:48 PM
