Sections of the Deschutes look pretty challenging- so far I'm a flat water kayaker.
Annual Ross Lake adventure was last week, just me and my best buddy from high school this time. 2 nights camping uplake a couple miles and 2 nights in the floating cabins. What an amazing way to experience North Cascades grandeur! Someone planted red shiners in the lake several years ago, the Rainbow and bull trout love them and are getting big. In turn the Osprey, Bald Eagle, Otter and wildlife populations all seem to be booming. Shiners by the tens of thousands now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689090269.jpg |

Another $25k of my own money to fix city-certified mistakes: Piping (Orangeburg bitiubituminous fiber pipe) from the 1950s-1970s.
It is basically tar soaked cardboard. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689134552.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689134543.jpg There was a nice mature tree growing directly right on top of my city lines and sewer connection. Someone once thought that was a good idea. City property. City tree. I couldn't touch it by law. Work underway. The city demanded a $4800 "canopy loss fee" to remove it. I told them to hide that idea away from sunshine. That is putting it nicely. I went up that ladder quick. They supposedly want my neighbor across the way to pay $10k to be able to expand his driveway cut to normal and usable. In this last decade alone I've paid more in city taxes than I did for this house. The city forestry workers were exceptional. On time and did a good job. Hard work in hot weather despite having to rent equipment. They swore on the Bandit chipper brand and must have put two foot logs through that thing like nothing. It was all gone in half a day. I will replace that tree with probably a few more..during planting season..and at my own cost. |
Went to work for some training. I felt like low class scum parking at the chargers with our bushokie Volt.

More Ross adventure-
The process to spend 2 nights in a campsite and 2 in the resort cabins are as follows. Insure your reservation at RLR are updated and locked in at the end of last year's trip. Hop in an old 911 24 hours prior to the desired 1st night of camping at 5 AM to ensure arrival at the Marblemount Ranger station in time for their 7 AM opening to secure camping permits. (first time I've paid to camp, new fees of $15 a night this year... Arrrgh!) Pack up a whole bunch of crap. Leave at 9 AM to ensure arrival at the 11 AM Ferry on Diablo to the base of Ross Dam. Unload and move said crap to ferry dock, and on to ferry. Ride ferry to dock below Ross dam, unload crap to dock, load crap to flatbed truck for ride to Ross- 500' and about 2 miles of dirt road. Unload crap from flatbed to dock, dock to rented powerboat. Boat away to camping spot. Glamping, aqua style. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.jpg Settled in http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.jpg Perfect timing, started raining and blowing right after the tent was set up and the 12' x10' bug screened canopy over the picnic table. Love that! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.JPG Room with a view http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.jpg First cup a joe half way down- eye's still at half mast http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.jpg Survivor... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689265775.JPG |

Well, OK.
2 cups O Joe, ready to go http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.JPG The lake was down about 20' making the waterfalls all different than full pool. Unlike Cali and Oregon we got less than a full snow pack- big salmon runs going on so Seattle City Light is keeping the Skagit full Devils Gorge, jammed up real good http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.jpg Just my best buddy from high school and I this time, nice and low key- He and I have this as a tradition for 25 years and counting http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.jpg Silly as it is, I usually wear my "Sovereign of the Seas" cap whilst boating on Ross, found it floating in the lake over 20 years ago. I keep thinking someone at the resort will say HEY! that's my hat! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.JPG Master level Glamping. These are so great to keep you dry and the bugs at bay- Now standard equipment for me. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689361506.JPG |

I don't even know what year this Olds Ninety-Eight is ('96?) but when it drove by at the local Winn Dixie I had to go photograph it before leaving. How beautiful and clean!

Aurora forecast was strong for last night, I went to a spot that affords great northerly views on a ridge line above Baker Lake- 2 hours away.
Loaded up overnight basics and full frame Nikon for my 4th, 5th? attempt to see and photograph the phenomenon... Success! Subtle to the eye but unmistakable waves of otherworldly lights undulating... stunning! It was sooo clear I could see climbers headlamps on Shuksan and Mt. Baker. Gave me an extra kick since my Son and 3 buddies just summited Mt Baker about a month ago. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689390177.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689390177.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689390177.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689390177.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689390177.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689390177.jpg |

Transition to the resort went well, remote controlled and crazy life like campsite inspector arrived Friday to ensure we had left nothing behind and approve our departure.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg One of my favorite views- Kind of "meant to be" it's boat #52. 1952 is when the resort first opened after Ross Dam was finished in 1950. It started out as reusing to floating cabins and cookhouse that were built for the loggers that floated around and dropped trees to be floated up and out towards Canada. The lake (at full pool) extends across the US boarder by a bit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg Another http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg Ditto http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg Bloody cold, as is nessesary http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689436835.jpg |
Took an evening walkout to the dam, this Barred Owl lived up to it's rep of being curious- walked by him initially, first saw him as he flew past down the trail and lit in a tree. He stayed put and observed me as I walked up and past him.
Love the absence of any sound when they fly close. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.jpg Dam! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.jpg View back to the resort http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.jpg Group of women have been coming in and partying at the resort for many years now. The flotilla started with the Unicorn, and now has grown... the only good thing about all that is I've seen the unicorn and the eagle dump drunk females into the lake much to the amusement of their rather drunk friends and the rest of the people there. They also were good examples for my Son and his buddies- Boys! These are the types to steer clear of http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.JPG Resort people and gear transport Cat- twin 140's make it an E-ticket ride across the lake to the flatbed truck. It too has been there at least since the 70's built there and designed by one of the Miss Budweiser Hydos http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.JPG The cabins are always in top notch condition, the season is from June 1 to Oct 1- they work their tails off off season. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689437682.JPG |
