Are you sure it's not 28 cylinders? I've seen a few of these being towed out of Chino headed for Reno racers. 3500 lbs and 4000 HP.

oh yeah, 28. 7 rows, 4 cyls each, in a spiral motif. can you imagine the time it would take to assemble one?

While visiting Chino Planes of Fame, I followed a 70 something aeronautical engineer (neat guy) who explained that the move to jet was inspired as much by their LACK of complexity than by their power. Apparetnly the big radial could only go 500 hours without a total overhaul, vs. 4000 hours with the EARLY jet engines. If he can be believed....
