The 1934 Pioneer Zephyr, America's first diesel-powered streamline locomotive. On May 26, 1934, it made a record-breaking run from Denver to Chicago, traveling 1,015 miles in just over 13 hrs at an average speed of 77.6 mph.

@CurtEgerer, your F 5000 pic seems to be the ex Hobbs Surtees he drove to the championship in '69. I was on the Rex Ramsey crew for the Legrand MK 11 #22 car that year.

Actually in 1969 the car was a Formula A meaning an SCCA Pro series car. The 5 liter rule had just been approved for that year and many cars were F B's that were converted and had trouble handling the 400 or so HP. The Legrand was more of less one of those that was not a very good car, under-braked, had upright failures and lack of chassis stiffness.

Nevertheless, in the pic shown, that is the car that won at Trois-Rivières in Quebec winning his and its one of 2 races ever, a non points exhibition event consisting of about five F 5's and a gaggle of F B's.

Here is the car on the grid at Mount Tremblant the week before. That's James Garner at the rear wing of car #30. Ramsey was involved in a first lap crash that stopped the race due to a driver injury that required emergency services. He was able to bring the car back to the pits, get repairs and restart. He finished several laps down in something like 17th place. The second win came at Riverside a month later against yet another weak field of competition in a SCCA regional race. The last race of the year was at Sebring where Ramsey was well off the pace but managed an 11th overall. What appears as smoke was, IIRC, actually mist as the day was cold and damp leading to the poor track conditions. Again, IIRC, there was a low area in a turn half way around the track that was wet and caused the wreck.

I have a nephew visiting from the East coast, he was born and raised here, joined the Military and then moved several times until his last assignment near DC where he and his wife bought a place on the water in Maryland.

He really wants to move back here and has made several visits just to check things out and be in the beautiful PNW.

I drove him up to the North end of Baker Lake even though I was up in that area for an overnighter a little over a week ago. We got in a few miles of walking through the Big leaf maples, firs, cedars and so on. I do love this time of year with the deciduous trees putting on a show, the sweet scent of fall as well as the crunching leaves underfoot.

It's great to spend time with him even with our very different backgrounds and outlooks on some subjects. We do agree on most things.

I do wish and long for our country to focus on the majority of what we all cherish and stop the division that seems to be the main focus these days.
