In an attempt to get back on track I would propose that world hates the US because we have the Backstreet Boys AND Jessica Simpson. Not to mention Garfield.

I haven't been a participant in the Pelican BBS for very long, but I've really been learning a hell of a lot. One of my favorite parts is the off-topic form. Lots of different backgrounds, perspectives and opinions make for some really amazing discussions. It's a shame to see some potentially interesting threads killed by someone who obviously just wants to piss people off.
So here's my question for the more experienced folks... How long does it take for someone like 952 to just go away? Do they ever go away? Do they get banned? For how long? I just think it's a shame that people here aren't able to have a REAL discussion while he's around... some of the threads he's killed had real potential. No real discussion, just hostility. Would this be tolerated in the technical forums? I mean really, if someone started a thread with "Hey, I'm wondering which P&C's to put in my 71 911T, what are your thoughts", would it be tolerated if someone kept replying with "Your car is a piece of s**t, you are a piece of s**t, go eat s**t" ?? In my eyes that's what's going on here.

It would NOT be tolerated in the Tech Forum, this I guarantee. These guys usually end up leaving after a while or they are banned forever. It depends on the troll. Not to worry they never last too long. In fact, his profanity laced name calling could qualify him already.

No.
Not tolerated on the tech boards, thank goodness. I think a lot of what you see here lately is polarization due to the elections and Iraq.

I don't mind the polarization... as long as people are able to discuss. I really enjoy the threads where different opinions clash, yet common ground is found... like here:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=192795 Just a shame this guy is killing the chance for actual discussion. Seriously, if it wasn't for this twerp we could actually talk about whether hostility towards the US is a real or fabricated phenomenon. There are smart people here, and people from around the world with real insight. Just can't be heard as long as someone like this quenches the repectful atmosphere that's necessary for a REAL discussion.

LMAO that was a good one. But 952 why do you keep bringing these things up? Do you hate America too? You wouldnt happen to be a terrorist would you? Oh god Im gonna get it for sayin that ![]() seriously...if you want to win us over, prove some facts and dont yell out obscenities...because your PhD capability suddently diminishes when you start calling out names like a little 3rd grader does. Getting mad and going....welll....your just a poop-head!!! doesnt make you better than us. I think you just have a self esteem problem and cant find good facts, so you try to insult us with profanity. So go back to being a wanker. I used to always think all porsche guys were a bunch of *******s, but in reality they are really nice guys and provide different views and opinions on topics. Its guys like you that spoil the lot and give us a bad name with your all-high talking "Im getting a PhD' and 'you best is still below average' comments.

But taking this a step farther, if we were the most amiable country in the world - peace-loving, all-welcoming, etc., two things would happen: 1) We'd still be hated for many of the same reasons we are now hated. 2) And we'd probably be attacked just as we were during 9/11. 952: de rigeur is American hatred. Point to anything from Israel to the madness of King George and we're despised for it. But in ten years' time, someone will hate China because of anything from mass production and overpopulation to innovating scroll art. Hell, even New Zealand could be hated because it's the land of hobbits (and in this case, trolls). FWIW, I know I won't have a taste for all things Kiwi if I eat some bad spring lamb and end up yacking like a violated sheep, but I digress... Hatred is "in" friend. It's the new desire of the new man. Hatred is in as is, I imagine, rhetorical threads.

Oh-Now you wan't to keep it civil. Look sheep stuffer, piss off. You are the one and only person I've ever had a real issue with on this board-and you know why. Take your shallow attempt at polite debate and jam it in your ring hole along with your anti-American-pro terrorism rhetoric.
I just hope big brother really IS watching. Please let me know when you come crawling to the U.S. to get a real job and way of life so I can be there to see the secret service stuff you in a hole and close the lid. If they don't I'll be happy, and believe me able, to oblige. |

But the origional question has some validity. There is resentment in the population of any region whose affairs are dominated by another. Whether it be a town, region or country. There is a strong faction in Quebec which seeks soverignty from Canada. (To the point where a PQ member of Parliament refused to provide Canadian Flags for a branch of the Legion in his riding.) Some people in Cape Breton Island (the North Eastern part of Nova Scotia) feel they would prosper if they were governed from Sydney rather than Halifax.
Yes, there are people in the Middle East, Far East and Central America who resent(ed) the presence of the United States of America in their affairs. The phrase G*dd*mned Yankees did not come out of Iraq, but out of the South in the American Civil War. It has been deemed "in the interests" of the USA to support governments (or oppose them) in several regions either for economic or political reasons. If you substitute "to the advantage " for "in the interests", it might give you an idea how the locals feel about it. People around the Mediterranean did not take kindly to "Pax Romana", even though many may have prospered from it. The Phillipean reaction to the USA liberating them from the Spanish in part led to the adoption of the Colt 45 as the sidearm for the US Army. The Vietnamese didn't want the French any more than they wanted Americans on their soil. Ditto for the people of the Congo and the Belgians. The Indians couldn't wait to get rid of the British (although they waited longer than the 13 Colonies). By the same token, every time there is a municipal amalgamation, people in the outlying regions say" they don't know a thing about us in the city" and take every opportunity to proclaim their differences from the rest of the region. You can wrap it up in better living conditions, more money and jobs, but if you interfere with the self-determination of people, you risk being a target. That is why there was a different feeling for the US soldier after Vietnam as opposed to VE day in 1945. In Southeast Asia, the USA was supplanting an outside power structure. In Europe, it was removing one. It seems the domination by nation states in some cases has been replaced in part by the interests of corporations. Would the British have been interested in the far East if it had another place where tea and spices were available? The term Banana Republic did not come into use because of the shape of the territories. Britain was not in Egypt in the late 19th century and first half of the 20th because they liked the pyramids. The situation in the Panama Canal zone was similar. Would the USA be so concerned about the fate of the Middle East if there was no oil beneath the arid soil? I don't know what the answer is, but if you are going to have a strong influence in the affairs of another, there will be resentment. Les

Another reason for the current hatred could be attributed to the Gulf War in 91? Not just the fact that we ticked off most of that region, alleniated others in the region because they had to choose sides... ect.
It was the single-handedly most dominating war we have ever seen. A complete and total one sided victory. Now, as in... let's say... football. When one team becomes so dominant that they are just walking over thier opponents, there are the vast majority just waiting... anticipating... to see them fall... connection? maybe?
