He's pointing at the emotion which concludes that the threat to us justifies any and all means necessary to combat it, including loss of our ideals, principles and heritage. Including freedom.

We are not talking about what you or I would do in the heat of the moment, in a dire circumstance with no other options. We are talking about American policy, about setting up American torture chambers, we are talking about debasing America and everything it has stood for since the founding fathers spilled blood for freedom and liberty. We are talking about America in the torture business.

If a bus full of schoolchildren were headed off a cliff, would I do whatever it took to stop it? Of course, but I don't live in an action movie, and its unlikely I or anyone else wil confront that situation.

Let's talk about real life, not some cowboy fantasy. Let's talk about a Halliburton subsidiary building waterboards to sell to the American Military, lets talk about training manuals that describe how to inflict the maximum amount of pain while keeping your victim alive, let's talk about military schools where the finer points of making humans suffer are discussed and debated, let's talk about awarding contracts for building torture facilities. That's what you are advocating, and its not some action hero fantasy. Unless your heros are Nazis.

Unless I am as dense as I may be ignorant, the writer is making a contemporary allusion to a more modern fascism. And the implication remains silly. He would do well to think more seriously about a truer parallel -- between Nazism and radical Islamicism, which dates to Hitler's close relationship with the Mufti. I think this would best serve the words and memory of the Pastor.

I wondered that myself ... but with the president threatening the very first veto of his presidency and the VP basically staking his entire reputation (whatever is left of it) on defeating the McCain bill, there's just no telling the patients from the staff anymore.
